marketing desperation (Dec 02 2003 16:48 GMT) - As I have argued earlier, Bush's trip to Iraq was good for the troops. Linux users: are you at risk from kernel exploit? (Dec 02 2003 16:48 GMT) - More news about the recent break-ins on four Debian project servers emerged yesterday when Wichert Akkerman of the Debian project issued a new security alert about the situation. It appears that a flaw in the Linux kernel was exploited and a "sniffer" put in place to highjack passwords. It was with the purloined password that access to the Debian servers was achieved. |

Playing with toys is about as advanced as they get. Losers. |

No Guns In Church? Put It In Writing (Dec 02 2003 16:45 GMT) - The Salt Lake Tribune editorialized today that recent legislation allowing churches to prohibit guns within their confines also carries with it the requirement that said churches notify the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in writing of their intent. The law (Utah Code 76-10-530 and 53-5-710) was supported by the LDS church and other religious bodies. Originally, a bill was drafted that would also prohibit firearms in schools, and the Governor's office even proposed an initiative to this effect (Utah Safe To Learn - Safe To Worship Act) the prior year. The Legislature, however, refused to go along with the schools prohibition. Department of Public Safety / Bureau of Criminal Investigation: |

Serious security vulnerability in Linux kernel found (Dec 02 2003 16:45 GMT) - Excellent, ahahahhhaahhaaaa, best news of the day :) Security professionals took note of a critical new vulnerability in the Linux kernel that could enable an attacker to gain root access to a vulnerable machine and take complete control of it. An unknown cracker recently used this weakness to compromise several of the Debian Project's servers, which led to the discovery of the new vulnerability. |

falling into the trap (Dec 02 2003 16:45 GMT) - Wow. It's easy to continue to skip posting when you've already spent a significant amount of time not posting. I don't want to let the blog lie fallow again, so this is my attempt to prime the pump and get back into the posting habit. I had a good Thanksgiving vacation. I was able to get my home office back in shape, played with PyObjC some more (coding an obsession of mine -- cellular automata), travelled to Mom's house and visitted my Aunt Mary, and discovered the wonder of Ginger Altoids. |

VW Complexity? (Dec 02 2003 16:44 GMT) - There's a thread running in cls on how complex VisualWorks has goten. The basic issue is with packages, parcels, namespaces, and categories - specifically, the intersection of all of them. What bothers people is the sense that they are tossed into the maelstrom in the browser, with no sense of direction on what to do. Here are some of my thoughts on this. The system browser really isn't that complex. |
