Thanks (Dec 02 2003 20:32 GMT) - I just want to thank everyone for turning up to the UK Webloggers' Xmas Party on Saturday - it was a blast! Whilst we're prepping the snaps, currently over 56 Megs worth (not not that sort of Meg) please go and read Gert's and Annie's succinct and accurate accounts, James OddBlog's moblog during the night and looksee Genius' and Tom's photogalleries (ignore my beautiful sweat patches, I'm a class act, me), as well as D's take on Jane Perrone and Tom Coates', ahem, disagreement. Great to meet weblogging heroes of mine, such as Meg, Matt, Tom, Cal, Anna, Tim, and others. Again, thanks to everyone for making it a great night and for turning up! Wahey! |

UK Webloggers party (Dec 02 2003 20:32 GMT) - It was quite odd putting a few names to faces at the weekend. Wild and I finally got to meet Taz (who has an incomprehensible Geordie accent). We found out that Manic isn't the 'angry young man' that we expected him to be, rather a besuited family man (who's bad at rugby). I obviously spoke to lots of other people too, as I have pictures to prove it, but the recollection is a bit blurry... Anna (Little Red Boat), Taz, Wild, Reg We'll be making lots more pictures of the party available throughout the week. |

FJ Advent Calendar - Dec 1st (Dec 02 2003 20:32 GMT) - We're kicking off the FJ advent calendar with forum regular Fat Merecat. He can be seen here delivering the first of the festive sporks: ...which leads us nicely into the fact that there are a couple of new spork pictures from the UK webloggers party at the weekend. Including a few of our leader, Richard Wild. |

Kofi Annan: World-Wide Webmaster? (Dec 02 2003 20:32 GMT) - From WorldNetDaily comes a chilling notion that I truly hope is a sham. A global summit set for next week in Geneva is expected to provide the venue for a plan to put the Internet under United Nations control. Developing nations - including China, Syria and Vietnam - are pushing for the U.N. or one of its agencies to regulate the Internet, perhaps as soon as 2005. |

Winners and Losers in the Online Travel Market (Dec 02 2003 20:31 GMT) - As e-commerce shoppers have become as comfortable booking travel online as they are buying a book on Amazon.com, the competition in the online travel market has become brisk indeed. Although the sudden decline in travel after the terrorist acts of September 11th caused fiscal repercussions for travel companies long afterwards, the industry seems now to be looking at rosier days ahead. |

2004 Will Be the Year of Wireless (Really) (Dec 02 2003 20:31 GMT) - Somewhat serendipitously (if serendipity means procrastination), I am writing this column on Nov. 24, 2003 -- the day local number portability takes effect in the U.S. This is also my tenth year of writing about telecom, and it's a safe bet I've written something in each of those years that predicted the following to be the year that wireless really took off. |

Dell Mixes Business with Pleasure (Dec 02 2003 20:31 GMT) - Annual revenue of $38.2 billion apparently isn't enough for Austin, TX-based Dell. The computer manufacturing/marketing giant is branching out into consumer electronics. In September it introduced a line of roughly 30 home-electronics products, including high-definition TVs, gaming systems, and software. |

Next Gen DVD Standard Fuels Format War (Dec 02 2003 20:31 GMT) - An industry group has approved a standard for the next generation of DVD players, but the move could be just the first skirmish in a future format war. The Tokyo-based DVD Forum has given its nod to a design for "blue laser" DVD players proposed by Toshiba and NEC. Blue-laser players use DVDs that store five times the data of current DVD discs. |

Jack London (Dec 02 2003 20:30 GMT) - I would rather be ashes than dust; I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brillant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot; I would rather be in a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow than in a sleepy and permanent planet; the proper function of man is to live, not to exist; I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them; |

D-Rose Daily (12/2) (Dec 02 2003 20:30 GMT) - My, how time flies over the holidays. Having a cold didn't help either. All tests are now working toward getting trains to run at speed through junctions. I have a few other tests in mind to make sure it's working like it should, but that can be done as part of the last open bug for this release. (Now then, where was I? |

The Tripp Files (Dec 02 2003 20:29 GMT) - Linda Tripp's new hairdo was on Larry King Live last night. I realize she's a cancer survivor and lost her hair as a result of chemo, so I'm not making light of her situation. I'm making light of CNN's claim that Tripp's hair "grew back in a dark brown color." I'm sure she is a natural brunette, since her Monicagate appearance was nothing short of bleached blonde badness. C'mon, though -- like she didn't dye her hair and perm the hell out of it. |

Re: Mac user trying to add photos (Dec 02 2003 20:29 GMT) - OK, that worked! Thanks. But the only way I could keep the words from overprinting the picture was to make a separate post. Is there another way to avoid that? And how would I make the picture smaller (so that it didn't take up the whole space? |
