Online Automobile Auction Scams (Dec 03 2003 19:58 GMT) - The latest internet scam story covered by MSNBC is all about online car auctions, where sleazy car dealers who get bad reputations in their hometowns turn to the web where they lie about their cars, fake good feedback, and then sell you a lemon. Unfortunately, there isn't much recourse. Many of them will fight any legal claims brought against them and make it prohibitively expensive to take them to court. Furthermore, eBay doesn't help things by only stepping in if the car is misrepresented in a way that would change the car's price by 50% (which would have to be quite a lot of misrepresentation). There's also no easy way to guarantee an inspection of the car, since eBay's rules say the winning bidder is required to buy the product - and often there's not enough time to get an inspection done (or knowing whether or not you can trust the inspector). |

You've seen her in magazines, you've seen her at parties, you may even... (Dec 03 2003 19:58 GMT) - You've seen her in magazines, you've seen her at parties, you may even have seen quite a bit of her on the Internet -- but socialite and heiress Paris Hilton(L) had her biggest showing yet on television on December 2, 2003. 'The Simple Life,' in which Hilton and pal Nicole Richie(R) move to rural Altus, Arkansas to live and work on a farm, was the highest-rated show of the night among teenagers as well as adults ages 18 to 49, two demographics key to advertisers, broadcaster Fox said on Wednesday. Hilton and Richie are seen in this undated publicity photo. (FOX/Reuters) (Click for Large Photo) [yahoo: 5, +++'paris hilton' +her +nicole -farm +publicity] |

Republican, not Conservative (Dec 03 2003 19:57 GMT) - "Conservatives once defined themselves as 'standing athwart history yelling 'Stop!' This antiquated thinking doesn’t suit (if it ever did) young generations who see the future as promising more freedom, more prosperity, and more potential. We don’t want to freeze progress; we want to unbridle it."Uh huh. |

Wi-fi network surveying in winter [Lindsey Annison] (Dec 03 2003 19:57 GMT) - Up here in Cumbria, it's pretty damned cold at the moment - we've already had snow. Today, it was just misty, muddy and cold. Trying to get EdenFaster from one village to another 1.5miles away, two of us were peering through binoculars from a substantially muddy farmyard where we can site whatever kit we need to - nice guys these farmers, they have silos and all sorts!! We were trying to work out whose roof we could see way over there through the gloom and round the trees. |

Protectionist farce (Dec 03 2003 19:57 GMT) - The Bush administration served notice to the nation's steel producers that it would rescind its 20-month-old tariff on steel imports. The announcement received a lot of attention, but few reports made much of the fact the tariff failed to produce the political gains the White House had hoped would result. Not only did the tariff fail in its intent, it hurt the economy. |
