WHO accused of huge HIV blunder (Dec 03 2003 21:59 GMT) - The positive HIV test was a surprise. The boy let's call him Sipho never had a blood transfusion. He did not inject drugs or have unprotected sex. He died when he was just seven months old, yet another South African victim of AIDS. |

Artist's Library (Dec 03 2003 21:59 GMT) - An Anonymous Patron wants us to read a brief piece about an exhibition of the work of artist Steve Wolfe, who creates three-dimensional replicas of the real books he owns and has read multiple times: The Abrams monograph on Mondrian is slightly off-kilter (too much time spent leaning on the shelf); Raymond Chandler's Farewell My Lovely appears so well thumbed that it's falling apart. The Vintage paperbacks of Proust, faded in Wolfe's fake sun, bear the imprint of years passing. How long did it take to re-create them? |

Libraries eye new identity (Dec 03 2003 21:59 GMT) - Fresh from VALISblog comes this item from Vermont's Battleboro Reformer: Public libraries, once considered solely as book-lenders, are beginning to supplant town halls, churches and schools as the main gathering place of local communities, say officials from the Vermont Department of Libraries. But this change, brought on in part by the advent of the Internet, requires a new way of looking at what libraries are expected to offer. "For a time, small libraries didn't have to provide so many services, but the reality now is that no library is too small to use, for example, inter-library loans," said Grafton resident and librarian Amy Howlett. "We need a good conversation in Windham County on what a good library is. |

Happy happy joy joy (Dec 03 2003 21:58 GMT) - As promised the homepage has been updated for compatibility with Firebird and Opera. Let me know if you are still experiencing erratic horizontal scrolling issues. I'll write a piece about Dreamweaver's awesome optional regions soon as a lot of issues that previously required multiple templates can now be dealt with in just one file.Topic: Sitenews |

Stainable Situations (Dec 03 2003 21:58 GMT) - Crap. I ordered a new 1 GHz iBook last week and according to the ever immaculate Crazy Apple Rumors site it suffers from stainable situations. I'm hoping the lack of airport in my configuration will shield me from the worst of this problem. In happier news I think I have finally "tracked down" the oddness on this here front-page, seen most often when using Firebird or Opera. It's all very comp'licated stuff having to do with margins, widths, percentages and long words, quite hard to put an exact finger on it, but I've figured out a new design for the frontpage that will remove the right column, move it's contents down into the left column and make everybody happy. |

python implementation (Dec 03 2003 21:57 GMT) - Here's the actual Python implementation of the generation algoritm I described in the earlier post. Things you need to know to understand this algorithm: "w" is a dictionary, keyed by coordinate tuples, mapping those coordinates to integers representing the age of the cell. The locals l, r, u, d represent the matrices shifted left, right, up and down respectively. The first shifts, l and r, result in lists, the second shifts, u and d, are dictionaries, because I needed to accumulate the neighbor counts. |

'Rwandan Journalists Found Guilty of Using Media to Incite Genocide' (Dec 03 2003 21:55 GMT) - VOA Three Rwandan journalists were found guilty Wednesday of using broadcast and print media to help inflame Rwanda's 1994 genocide. Two men were jailed for life and the third for 35 years. ... The prosecution argued that the men, in their capacities as media practitioners, successfully encouraged Hutus to kill Tutsis. Of particular concern was a list of what was called the ten commandments for Hutus, written by the editor of the extremist magazine Kangura. |
