Does Violating Intellectual Property Rights Make You A Terrorist? (Dec 03 2003 22:13 GMT) - It used to be that any hope for a reasonable debate was ended the second anyone called someone else a "Nazi" (see Godwin's Law). These days, perhaps it should be amended to include anyone calling someone else a "terrorist." Remember a few months back when the World Intellectual Property Organization cancelled a meeting about open source along with a quote that open source was "contrary to the goals of WIPO." Apparently that wasn't a one-off statement. Instead of exploring issues related to intellectual property, WIPO seems to now firmly believe that there is one and only one way to use intellectual property: |

technophilia (Dec 03 2003 22:10 GMT) - My new iPod arrived last night. I love the packaging, the hinged square box with the matte finish that opens up into two compartments, the way in which some of the components nestle within others, even the little strips of plastic tape that are used to lift some of the pieces out of the styrofoam inserts. When I pulled the iPod itself out of the box and unwrapped it, I accidentally brushed against the very sensitive buttons, and it turned on. Oddly, the menus were all in Japanese, so I couldn't even figure out how to turn it off until I found instructions in the manual dealing specifically with the situation in which the iPod were (inadvertently) set to a different language. At this point, all I've been able to do is to charge the unit. |

TiVo vs the WiFi adaptors (Dec 03 2003 22:10 GMT) - Like my last apartment, the new house has no convenient phone jack for the TiVo, so I’ve been looking into getting a USB WiFi adaptor. Matt Haughey wrote up a good review of his experience with the Linksys WUSB11 a while back, and it sounded like a fine idea. Unfortunately, Linksys quickly updated the WUSB11 and broke compatibility with the TiVo. So did NetGear, D-Link and Belkin. |
