Oops, We Did It Again (Dec 05 2003 23:23 GMT) - Another day, another broken bat. This one was amazing. Trippi put a $100,000 budget on the ad. He asked for $200,000, because he's Trippi. (He always wants more than he needs. |

Mine is Seven Inches Longer Than Yours (Dec 05 2003 23:22 GMT) - A new spot from Dodge plays on the stereotypical assumption regarding the male anatomy of African-American men in this double-entendre urinal joke. There's no use describing it. Just watch it. It's funny and it does the job well. |

Helpline Comment (24650) (Dec 05 2003 23:21 GMT) - Why do people call computers hard drives? I was at school today & our instructor (since August) always tells us ok, now turn on your hard drives (meaning computer) this is an English class. I was at the Salvation Army yesterday & a sales person there said we have alot of hard drives in the back if you want to take a look. They know I am into junk parts/computers. Anyway I got to the back & they showed me 6 AT/XT computers. |

Getting around the sysadmin... (Dec 05 2003 23:21 GMT) - BadBlue OfficeSurfer is a free, user-friendly software application that lets you completely circumvent usage monitors, filters, and snoopers. By running a client on your home *and* work computer, it effectively makes it like you are surfing on your home computer. Very cool tool. |

Making Mac OS X sleep from the command line (Dec 05 2003 23:20 GMT) - In a previous article, I showed how to use Wake-on-LAN to remotely wake a sleeping Mac. I often log on to my home Mac remotely using SSH via my Solaris home server, waking it in the process. With the default settings, the machine will go back to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. I recently changed my system defaults to never make the machine sleep, however, because OS X's sleep functionality will cause the system to sleep even when active Unix jobs are running, like long compiles. That is because the OS has no way of distinguishing between live applications and background daemons. |

Google irregularity (Dec 05 2003 23:19 GMT) - There's something strange hidden in this BBC report on Google's alleged changes to search result rankings. Basically, search Google for 'shelving' and you get one set of results. But search for 'shelving -anything', where 'anything' is indeed anything, and you get a completely different (but in fact much better) set of results. Also, I can't find any words other than 'shelving' for which this happens. |
