back in business... (Dec 06 2003 17:58 GMT) - I just finished moving Radio to another machine. It's been a crazy (almost) month without a weblog. A trip to London, Thanksgiving, getting sick, getting ready to move... |

Blogging-plus-RSS is the first winner app of XML (Dec 06 2003 17:58 GMT) - Interesting… Blogging-plus-RSS is the first winner app of XML Couldn’t of said it better myself (Maybe I would have added a horizontal application caveat - Blogging-plus-RSS is the first winner horizontal app of XML). |

Growth (Dec 06 2003 17:57 GMT) - One of the greatest joys (yes, I said joy) of working in this industry is seeing how young people can have such a tremendous influence, and also to watch them grow into more and more important roles. I turned 19 a few days before I started at my first software job, back in early 1991 (since it's impolite to say just how old I am now,) and it only took a few days for my co-workers to start telling me "That's just the way it is," and "Oh, we can't change that." (Regardless of how old you are, when you hear people say things like that, don't believe them.) When it comes to the influence of young people, software is unlike any industry in all of history. There are software companies started and successfully built by twenty year olds, and in many companies, merit is much more important than years of experience in technical positions. |

Howard Dean and the Soviet Union (Dec 06 2003 17:57 GMT) - For over 40 years, the United States led the West in the struggle against communism and the threat it posed to our most precious values. This struggle shaped the lives of all Americans. It forced all nations to live under the specter of nuclear destruction. That confrontation is now over. The nuclear threat, while far from gone, is receding. |

back home with a busy weekend (Dec 06 2003 17:57 GMT) - I made it home safely late yesterday afternoon and was completely exhausted. It felt like I was fighting some kind of bug and I had zero energy, although it had been a long week. Going to bed early last night seems to have helped, but I’m not sure how I feel yet — as odd as that sounds. |

Bridge: A giveaway plan (Dec 06 2003 17:55 GMT) - There is a vast difference between playing a hand when you see all 52 cards and playing a hand when you see only 26. But bridge being the kind of game it is, you are expected to play the great majority of hands just as effectively seeing 26 cards as when seeing all 52. |

Find outdoor fun at Lost Dutchman (Dec 06 2003 17:55 GMT) - Lost Dutchman State Park is named for a fabled lost gold mine in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix, but it's almost certainly a better place for finding outdoor recreation than hidden treasure. Because of its elevation of 2,000 feet in desert terrain, the park has a mild fall and winter climate that's ideal for hiking and picnicking. Hikers can choose short nature trails or a longer, more challenging route in a canyon known as Siphon Draw. Park facilities include a visitor center, picnic areas, group-use areas and a campground. |

Silky winter soaring (Dec 06 2003 17:55 GMT) - Friday night it was blowing a gale in Oslo, I did not think it would calm down enought to be flyable Saturday, so I slept long and did not check the weather until 13:00. The sun was shining, and the wind had calmed down and the windtalker reported a nice ... |
