A Fine Line Between Happy and Mad (Dec 08 2003 00:59 GMT) - If I ever own a Best Buy store or a McDonald's restaurant, the first thing I'm going to do is abolish the multiple-line checkout counter system. If you're at the store and you're waiting for the next cashier, you should be able to wait without going through the stress of deciding which line looks fastest, how many people are in each line, and if little Suzy McFirstDay knows how to open the register yet. These places of business really need to establish a pure FIFO (First In, First Out) model of customer service. There's nothing worse than waiting in a line for a few minutes only to see some clown jump into a recently-opened line while he shoots you that “ha ha” look as you're stuck clutching your box of Tender Vittles and tub of Cherry Garcia. Man I want to punch that guy. |

NASA's funding displaced by 'pork' (Dec 08 2003 00:58 GMT) - NASA's funding displaced by 'pork' When House and Senate budget negotiators announced a deal on a massive $328 billion federal spending bill, lawmakers proudly noted that they had funded NASA at the amount requested by President Bush in February. But a closer look at the $15.5 billion bill shows that budget writers axed more than $300 million from NASA's budget request and replaced those dollars with money for line items of their own choosing. Many of them are hometown "pork" projects that win legislators political favor at home but no fans inside the federal agencies they affect. |

SISI's worth a dozen -- hundreds, that is (Dec 08 2003 00:58 GMT) - The Small Initiatives Spam Index (explanation) broke the 1,200 barrier for the week ending Dec. 6 -- just barely, closing at a record 1,201. That's up 122, or 11.3 percent, from the preceding week. The SI Board of Spamologists, after watching its beloved Indianapolis Colts nip the Tennessee Titans,... |

Mission Accomplished (Dec 08 2003 00:58 GMT) - Clearly, the President's objectives for the space program have been achieved. Today, on Face the Nation, after pressing Chief of Staff Andrew Card on the challenges facing the administration in Iraq, the host devoted his last question to the leaked proposal to return to the Moon. I doubt that diverting attention from a massive boondoggle is one of NASA's official duties, but this week that was clearly one of the unofficial ones, and it clearly worked. |

look pretty for the picture! (Dec 08 2003 00:55 GMT) - (Vizzah) i decided it was time to indulge myself again. it's not the best picture (next on indulgence list: digital camera), but you get the idea. it's the beginning and centerpiece of what will probably be a much bigger back piece - my family's coat of arms. big ups to jeremiah at bluebyrd for hooking me up and keeping me laughing through the pain. |

Naming and Shaming about Refugees (aka what kind of newspaper are you buying?) [Maurizio Morabito] (Dec 08 2003 00:54 GMT) - Here's a list (by the Refugee Council) of UK newspapers that have spread false information about refugees: Daily Star Sunday Express Daily Mail Daily Express The Sun "niceties" appearing on the esteemed papers above between August and September 2003 include "Britain still the world's asylum capital" (it isn't, by a long shot) and asylum seekers described as "scroungers", apart of course from the usual implication that asylum seekers are criminals Surely it was only a case of corrections being printed in the following days? no comment maurizio@morabito.name Mr Omnology Ganesha Guru |

A Shocking Announcement! (Dec 08 2003 00:53 GMT) - After meeting with BCS officials late Sunday afternoon, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced that the NFL has rescinded the Patriots' 2001 Championship."A lot of people have always thought that the Patriots weren't really the best team that year," said Tagliabue. "Just because the Patriots got lucky that one day against the AFC's consensus #1 team in Pittsburgh and lucky the week before and lucky the week after against the NFL's consensus best team in the Super Bowl, the BCS guys make a persuasive case that what happens on the field is just one method of analysis.""We owe our fans the best matchup, and that would have required the 2nd best team, Pittsburgh, to play the best team, St. Louis. |
