Bill Murray, Bodhisattva? (Dec 08 2003 10:57 GMT) - While Alex Kuczynski's examination of the fondness for the film, Groundhog Day by Jews, Christians, and Buddhists alike is interesting, Gothamist found a major flaw in the article. In the film, arrogant weatherman Phil Connors is faced with living February 2 over and over again, and goes from grumpy and frustrated to slowly living his days more constructively once he realizes he's caught in February 2 forever, thus different religions alight to the concept: Buddhists can see samsara, "the continuing cycle of rebirth that Buddhists regard as suffering that humans must try to escape"; Jews can see Murray's character being rewarded by "returning to earth to perform more mitzvahs good deeds rather than gaining a place in heaven"; and Catholics associate the "deadness of his life at the beginning the movie" and each day, he is reborn and "what is reborn is this new person resurrected from his comatose way of looking at the world. |

Full moon (Dec 08 2003 10:56 GMT) - Full moon: While people continue to argue the pro and con, I know that I've often seen things heat up online during the lunar opposition. What'll be the hot rumor this week...?... |

Cold calls (Dec 08 2003 10:54 GMT) - It seems that telemarketing companies in the US are feeling the pinch from the national do not call list. They are now moving into Europe. I have been on the receving end of several calls including one most recently from a woman with a very strong Indian accent who said she was calling from New York - interestingly my caller ID showed she was calling from a very long number than began with 091, but I' fairly certain she wasn't calling from Galway. Is this to be the new spam, that we are unable to get any work done because we have to keep answering the phone? |

Yuck! (Dec 08 2003 10:54 GMT) - Tonight I had my first denture adjustment. It was soo disgusting. They had to be taken out, cleaned and adjusted for the sore spots. I was not looking forward to it at all. When they were out it was absolutely... |

GlobalWorldTech Spam [Dave Cross] (Dec 08 2003 10:53 GMT) - Has anyone else just been spammed by GlobalWorldTech? I've just got an email from them saying that they found my email address from my Ecademy profile. There are three Ecademy members who mention the company in their profile, but none of them are "John" who sent me the email. The contact wasn 't made thru any of Ecademy's systems, but in an email. If anyone is thinking of doing any business with them it's worth pointing out that their web site includes Javascript code that only works in Internet Explorer so they're obviously not as skilled as they claim. |

more macleod (Dec 08 2003 10:51 GMT) - Reading The Stone Canal today (in my continuing peregrination through books authored by MacLeods) one of the characters makes several references to making lots of postings on newsgroups. Hmmm, I thought - sounds like the voice of experience to me.... |

Bridge: Bidding snafu by all (Dec 08 2003 10:50 GMT) - At the highest levels, winning at bridge is determined less by system or card play than it is by accurate judgment in the bidding. Fundamentally sound players who consistently display fine bidding judgment are almost certain to wind up on top of the heap. |
