Male reading mentors help close the literacy gender gap (Dec 08 2003 19:59 GMT) - This story from the Canada.com network reports on father-son book clubs and mentoring/intervention projects that bring average Joes into the classroom to read aloud and lead discussions. Assessment of boys who have participated in these programs indicate that male reading mentors can be an important factor in closing the growing literacy gap between boys and girls. Heather Richmond, a literacy expert at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, says that boys need men to confirm the "guy rules of engagement" with a book. |

Information overload (Dec 08 2003 19:59 GMT) - Sad news Out of Indiana where they say finding a librarian in Indiana school libraries is getting more and more difficult. As more information than ever is available to students via the Internet, fewer people are on staff at schools to help students make sense of it. A shortage of both funding and personnel for school libraries is affecting the way students learn to find and use information, but it’s the lack of certified teacher librarians that has local library educators worried. |

Rock amp; Roll Library cranks up the volumes (Dec 08 2003 19:59 GMT) - The Boston Globe Reports on a benefit concert, at a nightclub, for a library. The Rock Roll Library, where music meets academia, and things can get loud. It's the brainchild of Brighton resident Anne Fitzpatrick, who came up with the idea for a different kind of library after a childhood visit to a more traditional one in her hometown of Quincy. In 1999, Fitzpatrick opened the Rock Roll Library in her Lower Allston home, having abandoned the idea of an actual library building in favor of a virtual home on the Web. The library remained there for the next three years, then spent a brief exile in Arlington earlier this year before returning to Allston this past summer. |

His tale's one for the book (Dec 08 2003 19:59 GMT) - The Toronoto Sun Reports on the travels of The Mallorytown Public Library's copy of The Story of Isaac Brock. Don Craig received it as a gift from a family friend when he was a boy, he's now 61, sold it at a yard sale, but upon developing an interest in history, later found it at another yard sale and bought it back. Clearly stamped on an inside page under the imprint of the then-Mallorytown Public Library was the due date: Dec. 23, 1909. |
