Team looks for championship win (Dec 09 2003 06:39 GMT) - As an elected official, City Council President Jimmie Cook expects to hear how his town measures up wherever he travels across Central Jersey. Though issues like size, population and the quality of the municipality's drinking water are all very important, Cook knows that in some circles only one thing matters: the record of the city's high school football team. |

Muscular academia (Dec 09 2003 06:39 GMT) - Last Saturday, my friend the old Maoist and I saw a New York Philharmonic performance in the Avery Fisher Hall of Lincoln Center. We paid zero dollars for our tickets, as two were given to my friend for free because he was using the concert to research material for his screenplay. The audience was composed of old, well dressed ladies and gentlemen lacking ethnic variety. |

Bearing the hunt (Dec 09 2003 06:39 GMT) - For the first time in 33 years, hunters in New Jersey can target black bears this week. The six-day hunt, which began yesterday, is not just for sport. The state and many residents hope this hunt will help control the bear population that threatens northwestern New Jersey residents by roaming through backyards and school playgrounds and rummaging through trash to search for food. Bears have also been known to kill pet rabbits, goats and sheep. |

Virtual degrees (Dec 09 2003 06:39 GMT) - Fifty thousand students attend high school classes each day without even stepping foot inside a classroom. Online schools - also called "virtual schools" - such as Salem-Keizer Online and Las Vegas' Odyssey Charter School offer students the option of attending classes through the Internet from the comfort of their own homes. Public, private and charter virtual schools have been a haven for high school students who feel they do not fit in with what is sometimes a cruel high school social scene. |

Ryan's Pretty Neat Little Christmas Trick (Dec 09 2003 06:38 GMT) - !Since he suffered a brain injury almost 13 years ago, our son Ryan, now 21, has not been able to walk or talk. But he does communicate with his eyes (I know it's kind of a cliche, but it's true) and via his laughter. Just very recently he's started doing another trick: I put my hand on top of his, then he will think and think and think and then move his hand out from under mine, and then put his hand on top of mine. Why is he able to do this now? |

What's the Frequency, Eugene? (Dec 09 2003 06:37 GMT) - In proposing a Religious Equality Amendment -- which would accord religious dogma the same legal respect as formal logic -- Professor Volokh threw a funny-tasting bone to us raving secularists: This [equality of treatment for religious programs] would apply not just to funding programs, but to all programs, which would mean that exemptions for religious objectors from generally applicable laws -- when such exemptions are available -- would have to be available to secular conscientious objectors as well as to religious ones. I think that's the right thing to do, and should generally pose few practical problems (except for one... |
