I helped make Office 2003 (Dec 09 2003 10:59 GMT) - I got a parcel from Microsoft today. When I opened it, this is what I found inside: It's a token of appreciation from Microsoft Corporation for participating in the Office 2003 Beta Test Program. There's a thank you letter, a weird-shaped pocket radio which has a built-in compass, headphones and a car sticker that says "I Helped Make Office 2003". Cool. |

Coke does music DRM in Europe (Dec 09 2003 10:59 GMT) - In different shapes and forms, we now have Apple, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Napster, Pepsi, Coke and maybe even Wal-Mart hawking songs online. All of these companies are rushing to enter a business with atom thin margins at best and business sinking losses at worst. In almost every case, the motive is to link to a larger sale be it pricey iPods or placing a brand in the consumer's face for other, profit-making goods. |

The big political issue (Dec 09 2003 10:57 GMT) - So much of what passes for politics in this country is mere froth. Who really cares which scholl the parents of Conservative leader Michael Howard chose for him 40 years ago. We should focus on the big issues - and one of the very biggest (forme, anyway) is poverty. So I'm interested to read a news report today that the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a study showing a decline in povery in Britain. There... |

The Hierarchy of Public Goods (Dec 09 2003 10:56 GMT) - -- Mainstream economic theory just assumes a market and just assumes a state that can correct market failures and provide for public goods. But the world doesn't work this way, and it's a problem that some economists think it does. There are always mar |

Japan's use of forced labor (Dec 09 2003 10:53 GMT) - While the Japanese government elaborates a dispatch of forces to Iraq, a lot of POW's in US and in UK remember and check their memory, thinking of the time when Japan's Imperial Army tortured the Allied nations armed forces. Apologies rather than financial compensation seem to be clearly set in their mind. What are their motives nearly 60 years after? 3 recent news reports in the Chicago Sun Times, the Japan Times and the Oakland Tribune remind of the past that keeps worrying US and UK, China and Asean nations. submitted by Joel at 2003-12-09 16: |
