Well, at least it's new (Dec 09 2003 12:03 GMT) - Here's another take in the "war for oil" conspiracy theories. That's why I love the internet - you have all sorts of information at the tip of your mouse-pad. |

So... |

Mile-high meals (Dec 09 2003 12:00 GMT) - Most people are familiar with the "would you like chicken or beef?" quandary at 30,000 feet. What the well-meaning air service attendants mean, of course, is, "would you like a chunk of square mystery meat that tastes like it's been reconstituted from a fine powder, or a small piece of brown rubber that will sit in your stomach and fester for over a year?" The solution has traditionally been to order a vegetarian meal beforehand, but these traditionally consist of something cold and unappetising with a packet of crisps and an apple - vegetarians, apparently, aren't particularly into hot food or dessert. Today I signed up for the British Airways Executive Club, in order to get air miles for the two extortionately-priced tickets to San Francisco I bought a couple of months ago, and I was amazed to see the list of all the possible meals you can order: |

"Every apparently non-polling technology is built on polling"? (Dec 09 2003 12:00 GMT) - Dave Winer is wrong on this one. He's saying there's no way to do what RSS is doing without polling.  RSS is based on an aggregator connecting to every server that the reader is subscribed to every half hour or so and getting a fresh copy of the RSS feed. This is wasteful, and it forces the publisher of the content to pay for the bandwith required for people to read it.  Usenet is a different model, but at a lower level (where it's all about the invidual articles posted), it's doing something very similar to what RSS is doing: |

observations (Dec 09 2003 12:00 GMT) - mmm... beer! * "Putting QNames into your XML content is like using TCP packets as delimiters in an application protocol." * "Bush's remarks sent immediate shock waves through Christian Web sites and radio broadcasts." * as brooks use to say, changing tools in a late project makes it later. |
