Out of the mouths of babes (Dec 09 2003 13:59 GMT) - I got off the train this morning and headed over to the post office to mail out my Christmas cards. As I suspected, the post office was packed. So I'm waiting in line and someone farts. Really, really loud. It was one of those farts that sounded like it hurt, a really long one. |

He's Crafty--and He's Just My ... (Dec 09 2003 13:59 GMT) - He's Crafty--and He's Just My Type We put up our Christmas decorations on Sunday, and inspired by our friends Cindy and Darrel, we made a new "lighted Christmas orb" addition to the outdoor decor. At Cindy and Darrel's house on Friday, we spotted these gorgeous huge lit orbs in the trees around the neighborhood. C & D had actually gone to a party a few weekends before and learned how to make these things, and they taught us. |

fdhd (Dec 09 2003 13:58 GMT) - it must be collection day some time this week, where people throw out their unwanted possessions and the packrats and furniture restorers come out of woodwork in droves like rats in a plague. our back lane is full of rusty washing machines (to the fucktards who dumped theirs right against our garage door, thanks a bunch you thoughtful pricks!), broken shelves, unidentifiable rubbish and treasure! someone (apparently someone called "stuart", actually) dumped a perfectly good macintosh se nearby, and so of course i nabbed it... |

Self-Referentiality (Dec 09 2003 13:58 GMT) - I just realized the self-referentiality of my previous entry. The discovery of a trivial piece of information on a social network led me to write an entry about the impact of the knowledge carried within social networks on interpersonal relationships, with my experience as the catalyst. I myself have added to the "persistent, available, and malleable" information about my life and my relationships -- however abstractly -- using social software (Movable Type). The act of documenting this phenomenon has increased my participation in it. |

Too Much Knowledge ≠ Good Thing? (Dec 09 2003 13:58 GMT) - I've spent a good deal of time discussing social networks with people far more knowledgeable than me. I use social networks for a variety of purposes (especially LinkedIn for business networking, with Ryze, Friendster, Tribe, and other social networking services trailing far behind). Until, however, an experience today in which I discovered new information on a social network, I failed to appreciate how personal an effect social networks (as currently instantiated by social networking services) could have. Some years ago, going through a difficult personal situation, I by chance found another participant's accounts of the situation in a public place. I understood their motivation as well as their right to do so, but this understanding didn't make it any easier for me to read what they had written. |

Something's rotten in the state of India - Asia Times (Dec 09 2003 13:56 GMT) - "In the phrases 'anti-incumbency factor' - invented by ruling parties when they lose elections as a ready excuse - and 'losing and winning in these states in a cyclical manner' lies hidden a fast deterioration of Indian polity. It is symptomatic of the Indian electorate's loss of faith not only in the so-called leaders, but in the system itself. In protest electorates have even voted for eunuchs against party candidates, a real cultural rebuff in Indian tradition." |

Organization (Dec 09 2003 13:55 GMT) - The first practice exam I ever wrote was an organizational shambles. I remember this one student I had who would turn in these homework assignments. He'd start problem 10 and then turn the page about 45 degrees and work on problem 13 and suddenly stop and pick that up on another page.... his homeworks were a nightmare to grade, random pieces of answers to questions strewn about in what looked like apparently random directions (curiously, they were often correct, or close to it, but it was a pain to grade). I wrote on his paper: |
