Recalled (Dec 09 2003 21:44 GMT) - Yow. I got a physical letter yesterday from the shop I got my bike from. It turns out there's a problem with the right crankarm that could cause it to come off while riding. Needless to say, this could be very unpleasant. Alas, the shop doesn't have any replacements now, and they don't say in the letter when they might. |

ORIGINS OF CHINESE. (Dec 09 2003 21:44 GMT) - In the comments to a previous entry whose thread had turned into a discussion of whether the Chinese language developed in the north (where history places it) or in the south (as its affiliation with the Tibeto-Burman languages would seem... |

African heads of church (Dec 09 2003 21:43 GMT) - Attention: An article on the ascendancy of African Anglican Archbishop Akinola in The Atlantic. The most important figure today in the Anglican Communion, a worldwide federation of churches with some 75 million adherents, is probably a man few people in the West know anything about: Archbishop Peter Jasper Akinola, of Nigeria. I was reminded of a killingly funny earlier Atlantic piece, a short story by humorist Christopher Buckley called ! |

Site outage (Dec 09 2003 21:43 GMT) - An upstream provider from the company that hosts this site experienced a router failure earlier today, and eight-cubed.com was down for approximately eight hours, along with all other domains hosted by said company. Despite assurances that the web host is connected to multiple backbones, there was a complete lack of service during this time. If you sent me e-mail and got a bounce, please resend. Apologies for any inconvenience. |

phpBB the online bulletin board (Dec 09 2003 21:43 GMT) - CORAL needs an online bulletin board. I've decided to go with phpBB. I just installed a test copy on strangeways and am busy tweaking it, learning the system. So far it's been fairly straightforward. Just keeping y'all in the loop. |

The Inversion of Eco Theories (Dec 09 2003 21:43 GMT) - Many eco-theorists see the biosphere, or Gaia, as a larger entity than the noosphere, or consciousness. In other words, the biosphere contains the noosphere; ergo, the biosphere is more important than the noosphere. Ken Wilber makes a good argument in Sex, Ecology, Spirituality that this is totally inverted. Wilber's argument centers on the concept of a holon. |

Bear stereotype incoming (Dec 09 2003 21:42 GMT) - I need to buy a pair of overalls. I know the whole bear in overalls thing has been done to death, but it really does look hot. I'll have to wear them with no underwear. Somehow it wouldn't seem right wearing underwear with overalls. |

Ozzy [richard perry] (Dec 09 2003 21:41 GMT) - What a shame that Ozzy Osbourne has to go and ding himself at such a time. Having seen the debue of their new single 'Changes' with daughter Kelly last week, I think this is probably the best release of 2003. It makes Kelly look like a Goth Goddess and really shows the father-daughter relationship. Brilliant, inspired, showmanship. Kelly drops out of nowhere to show she can sing, and now her father throws his full support behind her and her future career. |

CONTEMPTIBLE, DESPICABLE BASTARDS. I have ... (Dec 09 2003 21:40 GMT) - CONTEMPTIBLE, DESPICABLE BASTARDS. I have said before that I would not be at all surprised to see the Bush administration sell Taiwan down the river, when the going got genuinely tough. Despite the fact that I have been expecting this all along, I still cannot communicate how profoundly sickening I find this: On the eve of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit, the Bush administration signaled a tougher stance on Taiwan's moves toward independence yesterday, warning the island not to take any unilateral steps that might... [The Light of Reason] Another example of just how strong Bush's committment to freedom around the world really is. |
