LCD display prices set to fall in 2004 (Dec 09 2003 23:24 GMT) - Flat screen monitor prices have risen due to a shortage of panels, but new factories come on-stream next year. LCD display prices set to fall in 2004 LCD flat-panel monitor sales in Europe have slowed because of an increase in prices, with many potential customers holding off until prices start to fall again, according to display research firm Meko. But supply is likely to outstrip demand early next year, which could allow companies to make savings on monitor purchases if they delay until then. (Meryl) |

Tax cuts (Dec 09 2003 23:24 GMT) - Mr. Howard - we don't need no stinking tax cuts (and I use the word "stinking" in more ways than one). Put the surplus into public services, the services that most Australian's want and need. And if you're going to cut taxes - how 'bout instead of giving handouts to the rich you instead scrap the superannuation taxes. Or hey, even better, how 'bout you ditch the exhorbitant taxing of second jobs and instead tax a person based on their entire income, instead of slugging second jobs at the highest marginal tax rate (48. |

Plots & plans (Dec 09 2003 23:24 GMT) - If I'm up to walking tomorrow, I'm hoping that votania and I would be able to go on a Sam's Club run tomorrow, given that she's supposed to have the day off. This would allow us to get toilet paper, paper towels, mushrooms, cheese, milk, shampoo, and other things we're running low on. I hope that will work. |

Helpline Comment (24704) (Dec 09 2003 23:22 GMT) - Ben, the Toshiba password I mentioned is machine-specific. As far as I know, nobody has figured out how to get it without contacting Toshiba. And (here comes the planned obsolescence thing) Toshiba will only release it to the original owner, or some such nonsense like that. |

UN Puts Off Therapeutic Cloning Ban Again (Dec 09 2003 23:21 GMT) - As noted at Wired, the UN has again voted to postpone any consideration of a global therapeutic cloning ban (which would also ban most work on stem cell therapies for cancer, Parkinson's, nerve damage, and so forth). This time the delay is only for a year, but it looks like the anti-research forces led by the US administration are going to have to accept this defeat. As damaging legislation is put off, scientists working on stem cell and therapeutic cloning medicine can demonstrate amazing payoffs. This said, it's is a sad statement on human nature that we are even fighting political battles over whether or not to cure deadly diseases. |

Yes, We Can Have It All (Dec 09 2003 23:21 GMT) - "Labs around the world are crawling with prodigiously long-lived flies, worms, and mice." Starting from that comment, SAGE Crossroads proceeds to debunk the idea that increased longevity requires a trade-off in some other aspect of life or health. While there are always dissenters, it doesn't look like the naysayers have a very compelling case in this instance. Research to date does indeed present a good case that - through advances in medical science - we could have it all: radically increased healthy life span with no significant downside. |

New Stem Cell Based Cancer Therapy (Dec 09 2003 23:21 GMT) - An article at ScienceDaily (found via Transhumanity) discusses a new potential cancer cure currently in the labs: number 18 since we started keeping count in late 2002. The cancer therapy field is poised for a real explosion in effectiveness and range of therapies. This one is especially novel: stem cells seek out cancer cells and produce biological killing agents on site. |
