Photos from the Spin Room (Dec 10 2003 02:59 GMT) - So your intrepid blogger is standing there innocently enough, waiting to get a photo of Governor Dean, when the Governor arrives and is immediately surrounded by a phalanx of reporters and cameramen pressing in to get the shot or question.... |

Serialization and Inheritance (Dec 10 2003 02:59 GMT) - This is probably old news to some of you, but today I just discovered that if you inherit from a base class that doesn't have a [Serializable] attribute, no matter how you mark your class, it ain't serializable, either. Easy enough to fix, but it did take me a few minutes to get to the bottom of it, so I figured I'd share. |

disempowering language (Dec 10 2003 02:58 GMT) - maybe it's the context that my life moves in, but it irks me often enough to notice announcements, or calls for volunteers or signups, where the phrase, "if you're interested", is added to the wording.. it's such deflating, weakening language..... |

satta.de Belanglosigkeit Nr.572 (Dec 10 2003 02:58 GMT) - Alte Songs, wiederentdeckt It may look to the untrained eye I'm sitting on my arse all day I'm biding time Until I take you all on My Lords and Ladies I will prevail I cannot fail. Cause I spy. Oh I've got your number, taken notes I know the ways your minds work I've studied and your minds are just the same as mine Except that you are clever swines You never let your masks slip, you never admit to it You're never hurried. Oh no no no. And every night I hone my plan how I will get my satisfaction How I will blow your paradise away away away Cause I spy. |

Schonmal toll. |

Blogging will have the same effects to journalism as... (Dec 10 2003 02:57 GMT) - I am extremely happy and honoured to get a role at an interactive session that will be held in Davos in January 2004 at the World Economic Forum, with Joi. Both of us as well as other people will debate with the participants about traditional media and blogs. ¬> Loï |

Steve Jobs Interview in Rolling Stone (Dec 10 2003 02:57 GMT) - Interesting interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs about iTunes, Apple and the record industry. I particularly liked his assessment of the current issues in the record industry and conclusion that record contract advances should be done away with: The remedy is to stop paying advances. The remedy is to go to a gross-revenues deal and tell an artist, "We'll give you twenty cents on every dollar we get, but we're not gonna give you an advance. The accounting will be simple: |

User Interface Hierarchies (Dec 10 2003 02:55 GMT) - Russell Beattie writes: I'm looking at user interfaces more recently. Online, on my desktop and on my gadgets and I'm taken aback by their complexity. But I've had an epiphany about their underlying structure that I wanted to try to express here. Is there a reason for the icons and the buttons and the menus and the tabs and the list boxes and all the other GUI crap that we have to deal with both on a computer and increasingly on our mobile devices as well? |

Nursery rhymes produce warped view of dangers of head injuries (Dec 10 2003 02:53 GMT) - "So exactly what was that old man doing - and who was he doing it with? - when he went to bed and bumped his head and couldn't get up in the morning? How come no one called child protection authorities about the baby in that cradle in the tree top? And why in the world did men on horseback attempt to restore Humpty Dumpty to health, when an Emergency Services crew with a cervical collar and a spinal board ought to have been on the scene?" — |
