Mamay (Dec 10 2003 21:55 GMT) - Film Reviews: Ukrainian submission for Best Foreign Language Oscar is comparatively quite rich and strange for the category. Ravishing looking debut for shorts-and-docu helmer Oles Sanin could be a winner for more adventurous fests and rep houses. Auds will need in-depth program notes to stay in steppe with oblique story of how a Cossack falls for a Tartar beauty across a cultural divide. |

Bro' (Teso') (Dec 10 2003 21:55 GMT) - Film Reviews: Fraternal love gets put to the test in spirited, urban comedy set in a Budapest housing project which owes much to ribald, gimmicky style of American indie directors like Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. Risk-taking international distribs seeking an exotic niche release for younger, adventurous auds might consider welcoming "Bro'" into the family. |

Boys in the Sky (Osmondagi bolabar) (Dec 10 2003 21:55 GMT) - Film Reviews: Occasionally overeager to channel the worst cliches of American teen pics, film is scrappy story of four high school guys living ordinary lives and is a watchable experience -- a sort "Uzbek Pie. Despite pic's use of cute, fest-crowd-pleasing film references, it is unlikely to land on many international distribution runways. |

The Box (Dec 10 2003 21:55 GMT) - Film Reviews: Multi-hyphenate Kanji Nakajima's pseudo sci-fi puzzler "The Box" shows a spark of promise in the opening minute, but quickly disintegrates into nothing more than wasted film stock. This pretentious feature about a mysterious black cube thumping its way through a poisoned landscape is high on sophomoric metaphors and low on meaningful artistry; pic was inexplicably awarded a special mention by the Turin jury. Programmers would be better off scheduling the authentic statements of Chris Marker. |

Before Things Change (Antes que o tempo mude) (Dec 10 2003 21:55 GMT) - Film Reviews: A major problem with novice helmer Luis Fonseca's enervating drama "Before Things Change" is that the empty lives of the protagonists show no signs of changing. Their desperation is apparent, their self-destructive actions are more than evident, but not only is there no development, there's no reason to spend 90 minutes with them. Screening at Turin fest won't change pic's slim prospects. |

The End of the Animal Kingdom (La Fin Du Regne Animal) (Dec 10 2003 21:55 GMT) - Film Reviews: One man's frustration with the destruction of the environment is at the core of "The End of the Animal Kingdom," but while the message is admirable, it's delivered with an all too numbing subtlety. Joel Brisse's feature debut packs a punch only in the last few minutes. Pic was the unlikely winner of the feature award at Turin, but screenings outside the smaller fest circuit are doubtful. |

Old bloggers never die, they just get archived (Dec 10 2003 21:52 GMT) - Science writer Steven Johnson writes on his blog's first birthday: "I suspect the most rewarding part of all of this will arrive ten or twenty years from now, reading through the archives in chronological order, making all the long-forgotten connections ('That's right -- we were just moving into the Brooklyn house when I came up with the idea for that book,' etc.)" I... |

Corporate squeeze (Dec 10 2003 21:52 GMT) - Rubbermaid, the corporate spine of the town I grew up in, is closing its headquarters and factory there. In 1993 and 1994, Rubbermaid was named America's most admired company by Fortune. Here's Rubbermaid's history. The jobs will be moved to cheaper production facilities "abroad," so some will see Rubbermaid's demise as evidence for more trade barriers. But here's an interesting argument blaming... |

Of die jaren 80 nummers (last Christmas). Meerdere threads in fora gaan over 'The Best Christmas song', onder andere het Sheffield Forum. |

Journal Article: "American Shopping" (Dec 10 2003 21:51 GMT) - 2003-12-10: For many, it's smack-dab in the middle the holiday shopping season. People are out in force spending money. Something I think many tend to forget (and very much need to remember) is the simple fact that every time you spend money, it's an investment in something. And it's not just with what you buy, but where you buy it as well. |
