Australia: Gun control body has semi-automatic handguns in sights (Dec 10 2003 21:40 GMT) - The National Coalition for Gun Control says semi-automatic handguns need to be completely removed from the community. Coalition chairwoman Samantha Lee says the use of a stolen semi-automatic Glock pistol in a gunfight at a Hurstville carpark in Sydney on Sunday shows that legal handguns can easily become illegal guns. Ms Lee says the ownership of such guns outside the police force should be banned. |

California Assault Weapon Ban Stands (Dec 10 2003 21:40 GMT) - The Supreme Court disappointed gun owner groups Monday, refusing to consider whether the Constitution guarantees people a personal right to own a gun. The court has never said if the right to 'keep and bear arms' applies to individuals. Although the Bush administration has endorsed individual gun-ownership rights, it did not encourage the justices to resolve the issue in this case involving a challenge of California laws banning high-powered weapons. Many other groups wanted the court to take the politically charged case, including the National Rifle Association, the Pink Pistols, a group of gay and lesbian gun owners; the Second Amendment Sisters; |

'The Telling': a review & an overdue kiss (Dec 10 2003 21:39 GMT) - If my life depended on naming any one writer in a myriad as my "favourite", it would have to be Ursula K. Le Guin. This storyteller from Oregon has been a friend and constant companion down the decades almost since the thumb came out of my mouth and I found real pleasure in reading words of more than two syllables for myself. When French publishers took even a fine translation of Ursula's 'Earthsea Quartet' out of print for several years, just as the Kid was approaching an age to enjoy this one of her many worlds, I was furious. "They'll be back," one store assistant told me. |

Devil in the Details (Dec 10 2003 21:39 GMT) - There's been a lot of discussion lately about compulsory license schemes for music. I've said before that I'm skeptical about their practicality. One reason for my skepticism is a concern about the measurement problem, and especially about the technical details of how measurement would be done. To split up the revenue pool, compulsory license schemes all measure something -- some proxy for consumer demand -- and then give each copyright owner a share of the pie determined by the measured value. Most proposals require measuring how often a song is downloaded, or how often it is played. |

Waiting for my CRTs to ... (Dec 10 2003 21:38 GMT) - Waiting for my CRTs to die PVRBlog (via Ole Eichhorn) cites Rooters and agrees with them that it would be a good year to wait to make your flat-screen TV buy. From my perch on the board of a flat panel technology company, I agree with them. The LCD market in particular seems to have settled into a roughly 18 months over/undersupply cycle, rather similar to the DRAM pattern. Right now, we're on the undersupply side, but within twelve months there will be significant new fab capacity coming on line, so price/performance should show marked improvements by next holiday season. Personally, I've been on a jihad (internal struggle only) against CRTs since I invested in that same company. |

The war is coming home (Dec 10 2003 21:37 GMT) - Apropos the hate posts and the "die you liberal bastards" comments that pepper this site, Naomi Klein warns us of a far more serious phenomenon: The FTAA Summit in Miami represents the official homecoming of the "war on terror." The latest tactical and propaganda techniques honed in Iraq — from a Hollywoodized military to a militarized media — have now... |
