Asleep At The Wheel (Dec 10 2003 23:46 GMT) - Asleep At The Wheel As long as I'm bashing the legal profession, here's one for all you judges out there from today's New York Law Journal: A man convicted of killing an undercover police officer should not receive a new trial, even if a judge was asleep at times while the jury was selected, a New York appeals court ruled Tuesday. In a unanimous opinion, the New York Appellate Division, 1st Department, said that since David Degondea and his attorney failed to object to the judge's alleged behavior at the time, they could not use it to attack the jury's verdict years later. <true story> |

FDA Statement Regarding TK-1 (Dec 10 2003 23:44 GMT) - "Because tropical aquarium fish are not used for food purposes, they pose no threat to the food supply. There is no evidence that these genetically engineered zebra danio fish pose any more threat to the environment than their unmodified counterparts which have long been widely sold in the United States. In the absence of a clear risk to the public health, the FDA finds no reason to regulate these particular fish." [FDA] |

Welcome to AmTrap (Dec 10 2003 23:44 GMT) - I recently had the misfortune to experience the inconsistent workings of our great Amtrak train system. This is a company that is over a billion dollars in debt, but the government keeps funding because it doesn't want to lose a nationwide railway due to inactivity. So to fully take advantage of Uncle Sam's misguided generosity, I thought it'd be fun to take the train cross country from Chicago, Illinois to Havre, Montana (pronounced 'have er' and believe me, you can.) The trip heading west was flawless. The train was exactly on schedule for every stop out there, and we made it to beautiful Havre in good time. |
