Not your father's tax software ... (Dec 11 2003 00:49 GMT)

- Not your father's tax software company.  Known almost exclusively for its tax and accounting software offerings, Intuit is expanding into other areas including the enterprise software segments of collaboration and CRM. Two years ago Intuit acquired Turning Mill Software, rebranded the technology, has since gained traction within corporate workgroups and small businesses. I had lunch earlier this week with Jana Eggers, general manager and director of Intuit's Innovation Lab and QuickBase, to learn a bit more about product and its direction.

John Zuccarini Pleads Guilty Of Typosquatting Scam (Dec 11 2003 00:46 GMT)

- John Zuccarini, who became famous for refusing to answer any questions in court about where he lived - and then disappearing completely, was arrested back in September after police finally tracked him down. Despite his earlier attempts to avoid being held responsible, he has now decided to enter a guilty plea for enticing children onto porn sites by typosquatting on thousands of domain names similar to popular children's destination like Disney. He's expected to get about three years in jail when sentenced. While the article doesn't talk about it, there's a lot more to this case. Authorities have been chasing after him for quite some time, but in this case, they charged him under a very new law, focused on those who register misleading domain names for porn.

Too many Christmas lights? (Dec 11 2003 00:43 GMT)

- Is there such a thing as too many Christmas lights? I love seeing lavish displays of lights at Christmas time. Some folks like a few old-fashioned Christmas lights and some like to deck the halls in a blaze of glory (this one boasts 700,000 lights). And how much does it cost to run a fabulous display?

Snapshots: Polka pushers (Dec 11 2003 00:42 GMT)

- Frankie Yankovic was in town six or seven years ago, and we agreed to have lunch. I knocked on the door to his hotel room, and Yankovic, the polka king himself, opened it, wearing nothing but a pair of skin-tight polyester shorts. He might also have been wearing white support hose, but what I remember are those shorts, which were yellow - or maybe lime green - and covered him from just above his knees to just above his belly button. He was deeply tanned, and his chest was a carpet of white hair.
