Chicago pics (Dec 11 2003 04:58 GMT) - I hardly took any photos on the Chicago trip last weekend. I actually ended up taking more hiptop photos. Here are the couple I took with my camera that were any decent (other than boring bus stop photos for later).... |

O'Reilly Apple books and other offerings (Dec 11 2003 04:58 GMT) - There are two new Apple/Mac books and one digital photography book from O'Reilly released in the last few weeks that I am dying to get my hands on. The biggest interest is Dori and Tom's Mac OS X Unwired. The Applescript the Definitive Guide will take me to the next level and help automate more on my Mac. I am also wanting Derrick Story's Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 2nd Edition. I picked up the Mac OS X Panther Pocket Guide, 3rd Edition last week and have found it to be a good little gem. |

Militias Transfer Heavy Arms, Bolstering Kabul's Authority (Dec 11 2003 04:57 GMT) - Militias Transfer Heavy Arms, Bolstering Kabul's Authority A convoy of loaded missile launchers, tanks and artillery pieces left Panjshir Wednesday morning en route to an Afghan army compound in Kabul, 70 miles to the south. There, they would be turned over to central authorities, 15 years after ethnic Tajik insurgents seized them from the Afghan government during the insurgents' long fight against Soviet occupation. Although some weapons remained behind in the valley and some militia commanders reportedly resisted the move, officials said the political significance of the transfer was enormous, given the deep rivalries and mistrust between the Tajiks of the Panjshir and the two-year-old government headed by President Hamid Karzai, who is from the Pashtun ethnic group, Afghanistan's largest. |

Not sure how this slipped by me, but I just realized that last Friday marked two years since the first day at my current job. Tomorrow I'll attend my third holiday party, and next Thursday is the third group holiday lunch I've organized. When I went to Comdex last year (photos here), I struck up a conversation with the man sitting next to me on the shuttle bus between the hotel and the convention center. Comdex has been around for a while (though its venerability may be in jeopardy - lately it's been going downhill, or so I am told) and whenever two or more conventioneers start chatting, the interlocutors will eventually reminisce about Comdexes of yore. |

Teacher Sues for Right to Teach (Dec 11 2003 04:54 GMT) - United States: Gary Cole, a seventh grade social studies teacher in Maine, has sued the School Administrative District 1 claiming it violated his First Amendment right of free expression. It seems the moral moronity of loony fundies have managed to bully the school system into developing a history curriculum that forbids discussion of any non-Christian civilisations or any religions other than Christianity. He can't even teach the history of anti-Semitism (or the) history of ancient Greece, said Cole's lawyer, A.J. |
