Wi-Fi May Chase Bluetooth Market. ... (Dec 11 2003 07:44 GMT) - Wi-Fi May Chase Bluetooth Market. National Semiconductor is touting a low power Wi-Fi chip in the works: The company says the chip, because of its low power requirements, could eat into Bluetooth's market. It makes more sense to me that the chips will instead be ideal for use in cell phones or other devices that need low-powered components. Several other chipmakers have announced a variety of low-powered 802. |

Legalizing the Illegals (Dec 11 2003 07:43 GMT) - The United States should legalize millions of illegal immigrants living in the country, said Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in a speech in Miami yesterday. "The bottom line is, as a country we have to come to grips with the presence of 8 to 12 million illegals, afford them some kind of legal status some way, but also as a country decide what our immigration policy is and then enforce it," Ridge said. "I'm not saying make them citizens, because they violated the law to get here," he said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "So you don't reward that type of conduct by turning over a citizenship certificate. You determine how you can legalize their presence, then, as a country, you make a decision that from this day forward, from this day forward, this is the process of entry, and if you violate that process of entry we have the resources to cope with it. |

It's official - Men are Obsolete (Dec 11 2003 07:43 GMT) - Scientists have moved a step closer to creating life in a petri dish – without the use of a man. Researchers at Harvard Medical School say they've succeeded in turning mouse embryonic stem cells into primitive sperm cells, and then used the sperm cells to fertilize eggs. The scientists did not take their experiment as far as allowing the embryos to develop into live-born mice, but are now studying whether such a feat is possible. Groklaw has been flooded with information that indicates their story doesn't add up. The consensus of what I am hearing is: That it is probably not an attack. That their description of the "attack" makes no sense. |

crashing (Dec 11 2003 07:37 GMT) - Well, the backup server is certainly doing a wonderful job of backing up as I haven't heard one complaint at all, which means I got all the sites moved over and configured without a problem (thankfully!). And not terribly surprising but the Server From Hell is still running, although now its work load is significantly reduced. I was still pretty much out of it today, as well as the harddrive in my laptop which crashed pretty hard last night. I'm hoping that giving the laptop a significant rest will let it run long enough to get a current backup of data off the system. |
