Hartpury College Provides Students and Teachers with Anytime, Anywhere Information Access (Dec 11 2003 07:26 GMT) - Hartpury College has implemented a new IT infrastructure. It now supplies students with distance learning facilities, a web-based e-mail service and an intranet, while providing staff with wireless laptops. The college's use of wireless and new technology places it at the forefront of the further education sector. Hartpury College considered solutions from several vendors and Microsoft met its criteria most effectively. Microsoft products are based on industry standard technology and so integrated with the college's existing systems. |

Dodie Smith (Dec 11 2003 07:25 GMT) - "I don't like the sound of all those lists he's making - it's like taking too many notes at school; you feel you've achieved something when you haven't." |

It Pays to Be a Star on Charity Circuit (Dec 11 2003 07:25 GMT) - It Pays to Be a Star on Charity CircuitLA Times (have to register, I used a mailinator address)"[M]any celebrities appear at these events not solely out of the goodness of their hearts. They come to line their pockets." It seems that many charity functions arrange to honor a celebrity at a fund-raiser to publicize it. There are so many celebrities that accept payments, and/or expensive gifts, to recieve this honor, with the payment coming out of the charity's collections. While I think the celebrity's travel arrangements should be covered, the out and out payments, including expensive gifts, thoroughly disgusts me! |

Lots and lots of new ... (Dec 11 2003 07:23 GMT) - Lots and lots of new pictures coming - I've taken about 150 shots so far and will probably take 50 more tomorrow. I'll post 'em all up on a new page when we get back. Everyone else is asleep and I'm continuing my night owl ways - Jeff and Heather and their kids are going with us to the park tomorrow so we'll have a big day. It's probably going to be raining; apparently "Storm 2003" is bearing down on LA from the north and is supposed to get here in the morning. |

I guess the lure was too strong in this age of instant communications. Fucking instant communications. |

Gambling articles (Dec 11 2003 07:21 GMT) - Check out the article on problem gamblers. Probably a good idea for some people and yes I know what you're thinking and no I don't have a problem! In fact I think that this article tells it like it really is; that there is no such thing as compulsive gambling, just people who have no self control. |

Panther Printing (Dec 11 2003 07:21 GMT) - You know, for all they say about how easy OS X makes everything, there's just some things it doesn't. I have this old LaserJet 6L attached to a linux box. I don't want to buy a new printer, it suits me well. At some point I will just get an apple base station and a USB printer, but this works great. In Jaguar, it took me forever to figure out how to print to it. |

High Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC) Benefits (Dec 11 2003 07:20 GMT) - As computational needs continue to grow in complexity and larger data sets require analysis, customers are requiring higher levels of computational capability at much lower price points. High Performance Computing Clustering (HPCC) offers a solution that not only provides a powerful implementation of computing, but is also very cost effective when compared with the traditional method of using specialty computers designed for parallel computing. Catching up... (Dec 11 2003 07:20 GMT) - I've been (and still am) under the weather and having a hard time keeping up with posting, but here's a few things worth checking out: On the local front, it looks like Ed Rosenthal's visit to University of Illinois was a success (unfortunately I was busy here and we had our hempfest the next day). A good article on the student organizations in the Daily Illini. The New York Times brings back Brandeis' views on states' rights in this interesting article. I have always been a fan of his statement on the value of states' rights: |
