A heart-warming Christmas story (Dec 11 2003 10:42 GMT) - Not long ago and far away, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the sick elves. Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.[...] |

"...we're heading toward a Linux generation." (Dec 11 2003 10:41 GMT) - Brazil leans away from Microsoft "If this was a rich country, it wouldn't matter and we could buy Microsoft products, but we're a developing country and Linux is just a lot more accessible, so we're heading toward a Linux generation." Is New Zealand a rich company? Can we, as a nation, justify paying a premium to Microsoft when there are solutions which are (arguably) just as good, or better? New Zealand has been slipping further and further down the scale towards third world status for years. We want to pick things up, and Linux could be a good stepping stone, a good rung to help us up that ladder. |

New anti-spam laws (Dec 11 2003 10:40 GMT) - A few months ago, I wrote a column on the problem of spam. Today a new European Union Directive designed to combat spam in all EU Member States comes into effect in the UK. The Department of Trade & Industry has issued an explanatory news release. The relevant Minister Stephen Timms was on the "Today" programme this... |

Linus quotes (Dec 11 2003 10:40 GMT) - This link, courtesy of Obsessive Blog, Linus's Top Ten SCO Barbs (LinuxWorld), is a hilarious roundup of some of Linus' top quotes when it comes to SCO's 'blathering' about their so called Intellectual Property and the infringement by, in no specific order, Linus, FSF, IBM, the Open Source community, Eric S Raymond, Bruce Perens, Novell, Red Hat and so many others I cannot name, not excluding those still using Linux in ignorance of Darl McBride's many erroneous claims. A funny read, and if you think that is funny, do a Google News Search for SCO Linux. Some good pearls that show what happens when people like Eric S. Raymond and Linus Torvalds get mad. Blogging into Tables (Dec 11 2003 10:38 GMT) - Hi I'm trying to create a very simple site for someone (and don't have very much experience of creating websites myself, so it's a definite case of the blind leading the blind). The site is laid out as a table, so that they can edit areas of the template easily without knowing HTML, and I want to place a blog into one of the cells of the table, so that it retains the width and height of the overall page. Has anyone done this before? Is it easy? If not, would a wonderful helpful person out there be able to help me write the code to put it into the table cell? |
