Fighting The Power: Paul Devlin's Electrifying Doc "Power Trip" (Dec 11 2003 14:44 GMT) - It's a little unbelievable that one of the most entertaining, bracing documentaries of 2003 -- Paul Devlin's "Power Trip" is about electricity. In Tblisi, one of the larger cities in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, the struggle to get electricity to the people has taken on absurd, bizarre dimensions. The population, still accustomed to Communist-era public works systems, obstinately refuses to start paying for something they've always gotten for free, but the American-based multinational AES has been making its best efforts to rebuild one of the city's most important infrastructures. |

Heroes (Dec 11 2003 14:42 GMT) - Reason's 35 Heroes of Freedom are the subject of this nice column by Bill Steigerwald in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review a couple of weeks ago: Conservatives, especially social ones who believe in government spiritual engineering, will love half of Reason's choices and be stunned by the rest. They'll hate every laissez-faire thing the magazine says about culture, lifestyle choices and drug legalization. Liberals, meanwhile, might approve of 15 percent of Reason's heroes and cheer its noninterventionist foreign policy. But they'll despise every favorable thing Reason says about free trade, globalization and technology. |

(Dec 11 2003 14:41 GMT) - Voodoo science on cot death takes more hits It's a black box to me: but, even viewed thus, the story of cot death (or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - SIDS) looks increasingly like a pretty putrid tale of gullibility and truth-distortion.The latest developments: there has been yet another conviction quashed of a woman (Angela Cannings) convicted of murder of cot death babies - (Guardian today). Cannings is the third woman whose conviction was based on the evidence of the fanatical Sir Roy Meadow, and subsequently overturned by the English Court of Appeal [1]. |

(Dec 11 2003 14:41 GMT) - The Eternal German again?According to War Party darling Winston Churchill, The Hun is always at your throat or at your feet. It's ironic, perhaps, that the racial theory of Germanity seems to continue to inform attitudes amongst foreigners. Bismarck famously said that Nach Canossa gehen wir nicht:in the last fifty years or so, the Germans on the whole have practically been permanently encamped around the wretched place! |
