Open Source Silicon (Dec 11 2003 15:44 GMT)

- It is not just software that can be open source. Slashdot writes about an open source chip design. Well, it is still related to software, but it is a step further.Imagine for a moment the not-too-distant future when cheap nanotech matter compilers are available that can build stuff from basic atoms. It then becomes all-important to have easy access to good design blueprints for the stuff we need and want.

Wired News: Apple Store: Chain of Devotion (Dec 11 2003 15:43 GMT)

- Being the first in line at the Tokyo store was something of a coup for the pair. As an astonishing video shot by Masanori Fukumoto attests, interest in the new store was unprecedented, even for shopping-mad Tokyo-ites. The video shows the amazing number of people who waited patiently to get inside on opening day. The line, which Allen estimated to be 2,500 at its height, takes a full 10 minutes to traverse from beginning to end. It stretched for about 10 Tokyo city blocks, according to a map created by Allen.

The Day Of Comparative Genomic Anthropology Has Arrived (Dec 11 2003 15:41 GMT)

- With the announcement of the completion of sequencing the chimp genome, the era of comparative genomic anthropology has arrived. American scientists have completed a draft of the chimpanzee genome, aligned it with the human genome sequence, and deposited the raw data into computer databases that can be accessed online by researchers worldwide. Next year the results of a side-by-side analysis of the two genomes are scheduled for release. "We're looking forward to talking more about the findings once we have the whole story," says researcher Kerstin Lindblad-Toh. "Today we just want people to know that the data are out there and that they're useful.

New Studies Claim Ritalin Used For ADHD Causes Permanent Brain Alterations (Dec 11 2003 15:41 GMT)

- From an NIH press release: Three new studies conducted in animals, published in the December issue of the journal Biological Psychiatry, provide evidence that misuse of the stimulant methylphenidate (Ritalin) may have long-term effects on the brain and behavior. While methylphenidate and other stimulant medications are the recommended treatments for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), based on the more than 150 controlled studies demonstrating their safety and efficacy when used as prescribed, these three studies showed changes in the brains of young (adolescent or pre-adolescent) animals that persisted into adulthood. In both animals and humans, the brain continues to develop throughout adolescence. If the current studies are applicable to humans, they could have important implications for young people who use stimulants for recreational purposes.

Student Finds Largest Prime Number Yet : 2^20996011-1 (Dec 11 2003 15:41 GMT)

- Prime numbers are positive integers that can only be divided without a remainder by themselves and one. Far from being a useless mathematical curiosity, large prime numbers are the bedrock foundation of most current encryption methods used to protect financial transactions, government secrets and media files such as cable television pay-per-view programming. Many mathematicians also believe prime numbers are clues to some as-yet-undiscovered key insight into the very nature of physics and reality. Now a 26-year-year-old student has found the largest prime number yet, one that would take well over a thousand sheets of paper just to write out. From a Michigan State University press release:
