Hate Comments (Dec 11 2003 16:59 GMT) - I regularly delete spam comments from this blog via MT-Blacklist, but have a policy of not removing non-commercial comments no matter how weird or off-topic, and regardless how much I disagree with them. But this morning I awoke to find "white power" comments scattered across some older (totally out-of-context) posts, linking to a historical revisionist site "debunking the myth" of Martin Luther King. New policy: I leave up everything but commercial messages and hate speech.... |

Dave:What if you just want ... (Dec 11 2003 16:59 GMT) - Dave:What if you just want to link to something, should that require a whole post with all its attributes? It's a matter of user interface in the end. If MT made it easy to post and update a news item that was link-blog-like, people wouldn't need to invent a way around it. But that would break the relationship between the feed and posts. |

An Essay on Beauty and Judgment (Dec 11 2003 16:55 GMT) - "Beauty is the most discredited philosophical notion -- so discredited that I could not even find an entry for it in the index of the many books in the philosophy of art I consulted in order to find it discredited. Even if I believe that beauty is more than the charm of a lovely face, the seductive grace of a Mapplethorpe photograph, the symmetry of the sonata form, the tight construction of a sonnet, even if it is, in the most general terms, aesthetic value, I am not spared. For it is the judgment of aesthetic value itself -- the judgment of taste -- that is embarrassing." |

County maps and the 2003 California Statewide Special Election (Dec 11 2003 16:55 GMT) - "County maps can be deceptive, especially for large states like California. Unless the population of a state is dispersed evenly in proportion to the size of each county, there is no direct relationship between the physical area of a county and the number of people, registered voters, or votes cast within it. Which is why I was surprised to see an analyst from a leading all-news television network point to a map of California and single out San Bernadino county, California's largest county by area, as a significant reason for Arnold Schwarzenegger's victory." |
