UserLinux Manifesto Updated (Dec 11 2003 18:56 GMT) - Bruce Perens has updated his UserLinux Manifesto with updates from his mailbox and from feedback on the list. For those who have not heard of UserLinux, Bruce is proposing the creation of a 100% free enterprise distribution (based on Debian of course) so that users are not tied in to expensive support paths from distributors. Ideally individual distributors would adapt the distribution to fit their specific industries and/or regional environments. |

The ads, which have appeared over the past six months, hawked down comforters and plasma TVs at low prices. ¬> seattletimes |

Paradox II (Dec 11 2003 18:55 GMT) - Here's another quote from the article on the Chinese terrorists: But Brad Adams, executive director of the New York-based Human Rights Watch's Asia division, said the United States "should not even contemplate returning ethnic Uighurs to China." "Any assurances from China that it will not mistreat returnees would not be worth the paper they are written on," he said. If the Bush Administration ends up taking this position, then I would like to know what makes them believe that trade agreements with China are worth anything. If the only evidence against the theory that American manufacturing jobs are being lost to Chinese slave laborers is the word of the same Chicom government, then free trade with China is harmful to everyone involved. |

New in Rotterdam? (Dec 11 2003 18:54 GMT) - New in Rotterdam? Expatica has a nice overview of some of the Rotterdam nightlife. I don't agree with the sidenote that Rotterdam's architecture is "often ugly", but the article does succeed in mentioning some of the best places in Rotterdam to party. |

Registered DropDMG (Dec 11 2003 18:54 GMT) - The main, non-Conversant project I'm working on has required me to send regular software updates to the client. (A few times per week.) A couple weeks ago I opted to use self-mounting disk images instead of compressed folders. The client is on a mac, and now he doesn't have to think at all about how to open the files. I don't have to worry about whether or not he'll have stuffit or know how to use... |
