Flu Bug (Dec 11 2003 19:29 GMT) - I used this picture last year because I had a week where so many kids were missing from my classes out with the flu. Well, this year I'm using it because I've been bitten by the nasty bug myself and the little bugger has gotten me good. I checked on the Flu Watch.com site and found that my neighborhood was on a Watch status. I'm guessing we'll move to a full scale red alert here soon. |

Sweet Fancy Moses: Starting My Read And Must-See List (Dec 11 2003 19:29 GMT) - This is my favorite of all the current short fiction zines, and it's back from the too long months long coma. This is such an attitude free site, though I don't know how to expound on that statement, except maybe it doesn't take itself as seriously as mcsweeneys or opium. Not that I wish to speak ill of those sites, since they are on my list of sites I read every time they are updated. I just feel more comfortable on SFM. |

Ridiculous patents held by M$ (Dec 11 2003 19:29 GMT) - "In a previous rant I talked about the insane idea of allowing software patents. The European Commission is currently considering a proposal to that respect. In the US software patents are currently allowed. This has led to companies patenting the most basic of ideas, which any rational person would never think to be possible to be patented. I skimmed a few dozen software patents awarded to Microsoft, and quickly found the following ones I would say should never have been awarded, on the grounds that not only they are too broad and too basic, but also that they have been used by many people in the past, so they simply are not innovations but rip-offs. |
