This operation really runs like... (Dec 11 2003 19:29 GMT) - This operation really runs like a well-oiled machine, doesn't it. Almost half of the 700 members of the first battalion of the new Iraqi army to... |

Free Speech, RIP (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - Julian Sanchez wrote a witty piece yesterday about the Supreme Court's crap ruling on the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (whose very name signals its intention as an incumbent-protection measure). I've got little to add to Julian's piece but outrage. So does perpetually pissed-off Justice Antonin Scalia, who called the court's ruling "a say day for free speech." The ruling is a tribute to the genius who first coined the term "campaign-finance reform" to describe what, by any impartial observer's measure, are clearly infringements on the First Amendment. For god's sake, how the hell can you get away with limiting political speech of any sort, especially right before an election? |

Taking Wi-Fi to the Streets (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - You know Wi-Fi has really hit the mainstream when art students use it in their performance art pieces: Students from New York's Parsons Design and Technology have built access points into bicycles and will use them to send emails from New York subways. The architects of this idea seem a bit torn between regarding it as performance art and pointing to its utility. There' |

New Chip Competitor (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - Just what the market needs, another chip maker: Cambridge Silicon Radio, traditionally a Bluetooth chip maker, said it will soon ship a combined 802.11a/b/g chip. The company is apparently trying to leave us in suspense by saying it will offer improvements in speed, size, "or" |

Value of Standalone Voice-Over-Wi-Fi? (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - There are some good points here: A standalone voice-over-Wi-Fi phone is only marginally useful to consumers unless they just want to use it in their homes. Although this writer notes that VOIP offerings from the likes of Vonage enable cordless phone use, which pretty much defeats the purpose of the Wi-Fi phone. Outside of the home, the phone is only usable in hotspots, where are few and far between these days.... |

Wireles for the Masses (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - Tim Pozar has set up a network in San Francisco that delivers free Wi-Fi to neighborhoods: He beams the signals from the top of a hill down to houses, including his, that receive the signals and distribute them through the neighborhood. He's offering access for free to anyone who can reach it. His next stop is Marin County.... |

Build Your Own AP (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - William Arbaugh tells you how, on TechTV: He offers step-by-step instructions on how to do it yourself, but cautions that you won't save yourself any money doing it yourself. Saving money probably isn't why most people build their own anyway.... |

Confused CNET Article (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - This article is theoretically about combo Wi-Fi chips but really is filled with a bunch of misguided jargon: For instance, the writer comments that VCs have soured on putting money into Wi-Fi startups. I suppose it's all relative but I continue to see investors put money into Wi-Fi startups. In fact, some investors worry that too much money is flowing into the sector. |

Blogger News Item (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - Barbecues will no longer be a regular stop on the campaign trail if a leading sociologist has his way. The expert says only vegetarians should be allowed to run for public office--including the presidency! "Bone-biters are too aggressive, too prone to physical violence and too quick to pick a fight," declares Dr. Anthony Weltz of Cleveland. "In short, they're unsuited to public office--and unfortunately, that includes our current President George W. |

Blogger News Item (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - The government is to announce plans to move the principal members of the Royal Family outside London, The Eye Opener has learned. The move parallels plans by Chancellor Gordon Brown to sell off some prime buildings in central London and halve office rental costs by relocating between 20,000 and 30,000 civil servants outside the capital. Douglas Ramsbottom, a spokesman for Mr Brown, noted that there is no longer any defensible reason for civil servants to be physically located near to their political masters in the capital. "We'll give them phones and computers, and arrange video-conferencing, so they can be in touch from anywhere in the UK," he said. "And we think it's only fair to treat the Royals in the same way. |

Blogger News Item (Dec 11 2003 19:28 GMT) - As part of the ongoing trend toward replacing U.S. workers with foreign labor, the marital duties of United Carborundum CEO Howard Reinhardt have been outsourced to his Mexican groundskeeper, industry sources revealed Monday. "It was time for a change," said Reinhardt's wife Melanie, who has been married to the CEO for 17 years and has conducted her sexual business almost exclusively with him since 1984. "While I was generally satisfied with the level of servicing that I received under Howard, it was my feeling that a younger, more aggressive hand on the tiller might bring some new ideas into play. |

Iraqi Contracting Whining II (Dec 11 2003 19:27 GMT) - Liberal Oasis describes the contract policy very simply: These Bushies must be scratching their heads. "We told the world you're either with us or against us," they must be thinking. "Didn't these chocolate-making countries realize that meant: 'no troops, no goodies'? |
