Missing missiles irk Pakistanis - BBC (Dec 11 2003 20:38 GMT) - "A decision by authorities in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, to remove a life-size model of the country's nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Ghauri, from display in Islamabad has stirred bitter controversy in political circles. Officials say the move is part of a beautification plan for the capital, and is not linked to a planned visit by the Indian prime minister and other south Asian leaders for a summit meeting early next month." |

Spy, Adulterer, Whatever (Dec 11 2003 20:34 GMT) - The case against Capt. James J. Yee, the former Muslim chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, seems to be dissolving before the government's eyes. Originally accused of espionage, he was held in the brig for 76 days, after which he was charged only with mishandling classified material, plus some minor offenses having nothing to do with security, including adultery and keeping pornography on his government computer. Now it turns out the classified material he supposedly mishandled may not have been classified after all. |

The Greatest of Marlys (Dec 11 2003 20:34 GMT) - Lynda Barry writes some of the most poignant stories I've ever read in her comic strip "Ernie Pook". In this one which had appeared in 1991 (bulls win!), Maybonne, the big sister of Marlys (in pigtails) finds out that her beloved Uncle John is gay. Maybonne's grandma is upset about the revelation... In this next one, Marlys lays down her queer manifesto: |

Doctor Who: The Legend (Dec 11 2003 20:34 GMT) - If there's one thing I really hate doing, and the hatred of doing it has only grown worse over the years, it's answering phones. I hate answering phones at work, I hate answering phones at home... and I'm not really all that inclined to answer phones for PBS, either. But I do it anyway. Last night's Doctor Who marathon at the "other" PBS station was very nice. |

31 Songs (Dec 11 2003 20:34 GMT) - At the moment, I'm listening to a gorgeous pop dirge for wasted teenage summers, 'Ghostworld' by Aimee Mann. This reminded me of Nick Hornby's (author of such entertaining British books as Fever Pitch and High Fidelity) enjoyable little book on 31 of his favourite pop songs, inventively titled 31 Songs. Hornby, also the pop music columnist for The New Yorker, writes wonderfully about pop music. As anybody who read High Fidelity knows, he shamelessly loves the stuff. |

UserLinux: Repairing the Economic Paradigm of Enterprise Linux (Dec 11 2003 20:34 GMT) - Enterprise users have embraced GNU/Linux. But the very aspects that make Linux desirable, its low cost, Open Source nature, and the way it gives customers more control over their software, are under attack by Linux vendors bent on increasing shareholder value. Businesses are paying more as Linux distributions demand a per-seat cost and service lock-in for software that they didn't develop and that others support. Many of the early adopters of Linux are small but profitable industries with extremely sophisticated needs, and commercial Linux distributors simply can't afford to pay much attention to them while larger markets are waiting. |

Virginia Trying To Throw Spammer In The Slammer (Dec 11 2003 20:32 GMT) - Trying to sneak in a case that uses their tough anti-spam laws before a weak national spam (note: not anti-spam) bill becomes law, Virginia is ready to indict some spammers. Since certain spamming activities can be considered a felony under the Virginia law, which means that they can seize assets and potentially throw the spammers in jail for up to five years. Not many details are coming through, but I'm sure there will be plenty of press coverage once they announce the indictments. Update: |
