"It's very simple," he added. "Our people risk their lives. |

Iran? Who are you and what have you done with the old Iran? (Dec 11 2003 22:49 GMT) - The following comes from Al Jazeera, of all places, (althought it's an AFP article)... Iran has arrested 130 suspected members of al-Qaida and is ready to extradite some of them. President Muhammad Khatami said on Thursday that "those who have committed crimes in Iran will be judged in Iran and the others will be extradited to their country of origin". He said: "There is no place for al-Qaida, no place for any terrorist, for those who act against peace in the world. |

Syria gets ready for war (Dec 11 2003 22:49 GMT) - The Israeli military intelligence service, Aman, has informed the government that the Syrian leader, President Bashar Al-Assad, has instructed his army to get ready for an Israeli military attack. In open provocation of Syria, Israel has been conducting air force flights over Syrian airfields, barracks and other military interests, and has attacked 'terrorist' targets within Syrian territory. On 5 October, Israeli F-16 jets bombed an empty Palestinian training base near Damascus. It was the first assault on Syrian soil in 30 years and the Syrians were stunned, failed to retaliate and were mocked throughout the Arab world for letting the Israelis humiliate them. In October, eight Israeli F-15's crossed the international border with Lebanon, flew over Beirut and all the way over the 35,000 Syrian troops stationed in northern Lebanon. |

Domestic Islamofascism: John Lee Malvo Case (Dec 11 2003 22:49 GMT) - Political correctness run amok. Domestic islamofascism is not recognized as the enemy: December 10, 2003 -- FROM the moment John Allen Muhammad and Lee Malvo were arrested in the Beltway-area sniper case last fall, the media and Muslim activists wanted us to believe that the serial killings had absolutely nothing to do with Islamic terrorism: * CNN downplayed Muhammad’s religious conversion - calling him by his old name, John Allen Williams, when his identity was first revealed. Malvo was cast as a clueless dupe with no true convictions. |

"It will be fiefdoms, Afghanisation" (Dec 11 2003 22:49 GMT) - No surprise here, as Palestinian-Arabs march toward the civil war: "Former heads of security services, including the Mossad intelligence agency, who drew up the report for Sharon believe there is no chance of reaching a peace deal while Arafat is alive or for many years after he leaves the stage. ''I wouldn't put my money on peace,'' Shmuel Bar, chairman of the study team, said of its ''day-after scenario'' in which it forecast a power vacuum filled by warlords. ''What we will see is a lot of small areas of control and influence. Warlords with their own armed forces... |

Boycott Coca Cola Campaign in a hole – stop digging (Dec 11 2003 22:47 GMT) - The boycott Coke tactic is a political disaster and the sectarianism toward SIPTU workers is too. This article is an attempt to make some general arguments on why the boycott Coca Cola campaign is misconceived. I am submitting it here because the issue of the wisdom of the boycott coke tactic has only been addressed in reaction to the series of postings that have pushed the boycott further or that have sought to unnecessarily slander the position of Irish Coca Cola workers. ... |

Holiday songs: The Boston Camerata, Sing We Noël (Dec 11 2003 22:46 GMT) - On Tuesday I wrote about Dave Brubeck’s Christmas recording recalling holiday traditions of people gathered round the piano in the parlor, playing and singing. As I did so, I reflected that this probably isn’t a tradition for everyone. Our family is atypical in a bunch of ways, notably in having musical talent on both sides. |

Hommage à Kermit (Dec 11 2003 22:46 GMT) - Fabulous thread on Slashdot about Kermit (the file transfer protocol and application, not the Frog). I remember, back in the day (like, 1993), when using Kermit over a modem was the only way one could deal with the truly astounding line noise on the local phone lines in Charlottesville. Mind, this was over a 2400 baud modem, to which I could actually send Hayes modem codes to improve performance. Remember that? No, of course not. |

(Dec 11 2003 22:46 GMT) - bot-valette (otherwise known as "me") posted a story on my blog of auto-generated goodness about a lady who locked her [non-biological] kid in a dryer for weeks at a time. it made me think that maybe i should read my bot-blog more often, but then i realized that post is preceeded by a bush post and i reconsidered. |
