Offshoring Benefits (Dec 12 2003 01:41 GMT) - Over the past few months, as the shift in jobs to lower-cost countries like India has accelerated, there as been some concern in countries like the US. The Economist writes that offshoring "promises huge benefits to consumers everywhere." The main advantage of shifting business operations to India and similar low-cost countries comes from a combination of lower wages and the improvement in the quality and price of international telecommunications. A report by HSBC says that the cost of a one-minute telephone call from India to America and Britain has fallen by more than 80% since January 2001. With high-grade jobs, the saving on wages is not as high as with lower-grade ones. |

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Love & Friendship (Dec 12 2003 01:35 GMT) - I had a most interesting dream. I was shopping with Laura in JC Penneys and we were looking at the purses & stuff that have your initials on them. I found a ton of purses with my initial (something that doesnt happen in real life) but they were expensive. Anyhoo was looking at stuff and eventually dramaqueen088 and softballchic088 joined me. While we were venturing down the aisles, I spotted Stupid Jewish Kid & his mom so the rest of the dream was spent hiding from him and laughing. |

Katie John (Dec 12 2003 01:35 GMT) - The Thirty-nine Steps and Greenmantle. By the end of Greenmantle, I am ready to leap out of the trenches in a manly way, pale, biting my lip and refusing the love of an evil yet alluringly passionate woman, joining my manly brothers in a manly death in a hail of bullets while singing of the glories of eternal England. Also Maudie (more victorian porn). The Wind in the Willows. The Anatomy of Melancholy. |

I got a bunch of them for 50 cents each - all "wordsworth classic erotica". Teleny was really good and I would believe the rumour that it was written by Oscar Wilde. Two Flappers in Paris - ugh! |

Wake Up, I'm Fat! (Dec 12 2003 01:35 GMT) - A few years ago, I studied American Sign Language. I knew that one of my weaknesses was that I didn't have the nerve to just jump in and start talking to deaf people, and I knew that if I continued to study the language, that would be my biggest obstacle to fluency. In Camryn Manheim's book, she describes how she became a sign language interpreter. She had taken one semester of sign language, and found herself on the scene when a deaf man was injured. She ended up interpreting for the paremedics ... |
