Offshoring Benefits (Dec 12 2003 01:41 GMT)

- Over the past few months, as the shift in jobs to lower-cost countries like India has accelerated, there as been some concern in countries like the US. The Economist writes that offshoring "promises huge benefits to consumers everywhere." The main advantage of shifting business operations to India and similar low-cost countries comes from a combination of lower wages and the improvement in the quality and price of international telecommunications. A report by HSBC says that the cost of a one-minute telephone call from India to America and Britain has fallen by more than 80% since January 2001. With high-grade jobs, the saving on wages is not as high as with lower-grade ones.

Vietnam's new cardinal leads triumphant first Mass (Dec 12 2003 01:37 GMT)

- Hundreds of Catholics in Vietnam have celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving, led by the newest cardinal appointed by the Vatican and approved by the communist government. The two-hour mass in Ho Chi Minh City was a hometown debut for Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man. Reuters news agency reports he entered the French colonial-era Notre Dame cathedral wearing the red cap of his appointment, and was greeted with thunderous applause from a capacity crowd. Appointed by Pope John Paul in late September, Cardinal Man joins one other Vietnamese cardinal, Pham Dinh Tung, who lives in retirement in the capital, Hanoi.

While we were venturing down the aisles, I spotted Stupid Jewish Kid & his mom so the rest of the dream was spent hiding from him and laughing.

I knew that one of my weaknesses was that I didn't have the nerve to just jump in and start talking to deaf people, and I knew that if I continued to study the language, that would be my biggest obstacle to fluency. In Camryn Manheim's book, she describes how she became a sign language interpreter. She had taken one semester of sign language, and found herself on the scene when a deaf man was injured. She ended up interpreting for the paremedics ...
