Entertaining Lesbians: Celebrity, Sexuality, and Self-Invention (Dec 12 2003 01:35 GMT) - One prize was a new history tome titled, "Entertaining Lesbians," by Martha Gever accompanied by a unique, hand-assembled photo album memorializing a pioneer female Hollywood director, Dorothy Arzner. The other catch was a wonderful example of the confounding art of Collier Schorr, whose photographs usually portray young males in a way which discomforts even those who would normally be attracted to them. This image was different. The small color print portrayed two affectionate young lesbian ... |

All in a Lifetime: An Autobiography (Dec 12 2003 01:35 GMT) - Today, I told My Moral Leader about an incredibly moving and engaging book I am reading: the autobiography of Dr Ruth Westheimer. I wrote to him:Dr Ruth comes from an Orthodox family, and lost her parents and grandparents in concentration camps (she was sent to Switzerland, one of only 300 children from Germany allowed to go, because her father was in a detention camp -- and lived in an orphanage there, cleaning and acting as a servant for Swiss Jewish kids, from the age of 10 until after her 17 ... |

Building Web Services with Java: Making Sense of XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI (Dec 12 2003 01:35 GMT) - I'm working on writing some example code for our upcoming book (the 2nd edition of Building Web Services with Java) right now, and in a little while I'm going to go out to the blues jam at Johnny D's, play a set or two, and then head to dinner with my family at a new restaurant in the South End called the Union Bar and Grille, which is supposed to be just faboo - it's by the same team that did Aquitaine and Aquitaine Bis. |

The First Law of Nature Demands a Second Amendment (Dec 12 2003 01:34 GMT) - The attacks on our World Trade Center have brought unimaginable grief to thousands of American families. They have also ignited a keen awareness of our vulnerability. And, the dereliction of federal government has become evident by its inability or refusal to provide adequate nationwide defenses from foreign aggression. Whether the appropriate charge is criminal negligence or high treason, there is no question that the people have been betrayed. However, individual security is not the constitutional responsibility of government. |

Ohio Concealed-Weapons Bill Faces Veto (Dec 12 2003 01:34 GMT) - Ohio lawmakers approved legislation that would let residents carry concealed weapons, but Gov. Bob Taft said he would veto it. The bill, passed by wide margins in the House and Senate on Wednesday, would allow Ohio residents to carry concealed weapons after passing a background check and completing safety training. Taft promised a veto after unsuccessfully pushing to give reporters access to all names of permit holders by county. The bill passed by the legislature would allow reporters access to limited public records only on a name-by-name basis. |
