VNC and RSS (Dec 12 2003 01:25 GMT) - I think two innovative technologies which will play a key role in the future are vnc and RSS. vnc makes possible thin-client computing, while RSS makes possible the publish-subscribe web. They both allow us to rethink computing and information. vnc is the magical element which will make for affordable computing. It enables software to be run on servers, and the screens to be displayed on remote devices. |

NPR (Dec 12 2003 01:24 GMT) - Off topic: It's my birthday today, and I couldn't ask to spend it a better way: Christina and I are on vacation in NYC. I blew off part of said vacation today to do last-minute interviews for NPR on the Geneva WSIS summit, and for WCBS channel 2's 6 o'clock news on AT&T's new Internet phones. I had planned to look up a few people while here, but work ate the week and now we're flying out too soon. |

- Winter Corporation conducts a survey of large databases, ranking the largest in a number of categories. The top by total size this year is France Telecom with a 29-terabyte Oracle database. Most rows goes to AT&T with half a trillion rows in a Daytona database. There are lots of other categories. Surprising to me was how many off-brand databases are in the lists. |
