Vikings: New linebackers looking good (Dec 12 2003 04:20 GMT) - The ball tucked securely under his right arm, Mike Nattiel dashed down the right sideline, carrying with him the hopes of every undersized and overlooked college linebacker in the country. As he returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown Sunday, capping the Vikings' 34-7 romp against Seattle, Nattiel felt vindicated. |

Angry diverse person-souls (Dec 12 2003 04:20 GMT) - Jon Carroll says that instead of Davy Crockett's motto, perhaps we'd better served by, "Be sure you're right, but be alert for signs that you are wrong.": Seems to me that our current president is a "be sure you're right, then go ahead" kind of guy. He makes a public virtue of "staying the course," which is a good idea only if the course is a good idea. The invasion and occupation of Iraq was never a good idea, and it gets less good all the time, and staying that course is a chump's game. |

Linux: Reducing Disk And Memory Footprint (Dec 12 2003 04:19 GMT) - Matt Mackall announced a new "-tiny" patchset for the 2.6 kernel, humorously explaining the chosen name, "someone already took -mm" (referring of course to Andrew Morton's [interview] -mm patchset [story], coincidentally Matt's initials). As to its purpose, Matt explains, "The aim of this tree is to collect patches that reduce kernel disk and memory footprint as well as tools for working on small systems, an area Linux mainstream has been moving away from since Linus got a real job. Target users are things like embedded systems, small or legacy desktop folks, and handhelds." He goes on to further describe: |

Blogger News Item (Dec 12 2003 04:19 GMT) - Krystolline Clarity "But it seems to me that the debate on Iraq, as on so many things in the Bush administration, was pretty much stalled before Sept. 11. You had bureaucratic gridlock. The president hadn't seen much of a need to focus on the issue. State and Defense were at loggerheads. |

Redefining the edges of new Yiddish Music (Dec 12 2003 04:18 GMT) - Up in Boston, we just got to watch an astounding new band, Khevre, blow the house down. Comprised of (compromised by?) students from the New England Conservatory, including one the singers (Aoife O'Donovan) from my favorite bluegrass band, Wayfaring Strangers (the "Brave Old World" of bluegrass), this was intensely good. Bandleader Michael Winograd was amazing on clarinet. Maybe better. |

Holly Wreath Man: Chapter 12 (Dec 12 2003 04:18 GMT) - Twenty years in the field had taught John Turner one indisputable fact: What sweatshop owners told you and what you found in their records were two entirely different things. He was certain that the Holly Wreath Man was no exception. "My daddy started the business during the Depression. It was big business for a while," Pop Henderson said, pointing to a faded photo of a train bearing a "Holly Express" sign on a boxcar. |
