Constitution Européenne : l'heure de vérité (Dec 12 2003 06:59 GMT) - In an interview with French daily Le Monde, one of the Convention's Vice-Presidents, Jean-Luc Dehaene has warned, "after the moment of joy on 1 May 2004, when the new Member States enter the EU, we will have four or five difficult years". Le sommet européen qui s'ouvre vendredi 12 décembre ... |

Warfare rules in Iraq. | Metafilter (Dec 12 2003 06:58 GMT) - Argh. This talks about the Geneva Convention and the rules of war. The most interesting part is the commentary at Metafilter about the links. So few of those writing seem to recognise that war is all about the killing. And yes folks! |

It takes a snake to prove that .NET is fast for scripting (Dec 12 2003 06:57 GMT) - Some language experts have said publicly that scripting languages built on .NET or Java bytecodes will always perform poorly due to limitations in bytecode design. Jim Hugunin, contrarian to the core, has posted an email which suggests the reverse, by comparing Python written in C (CPython) with one Jim wrote using .NET (IronPython). Jim is the original author of Jython, the Java implementation of Python, so he has the skills to back his claim. |

13 Days, 1000 Photos (Dec 12 2003 06:57 GMT) - Tonight, I had an epiphany. While considering the fact that I don't take nearly as many photos as I'd like, I came upon the idea of taking 1,000 photos in thirteen days. Why thirteen days? Good question. From December 18th to the 30th I will be on vacation with my family. |

Agreed. (Dec 12 2003 06:56 GMT) - I read Best Of The Web daily and noticed the cheap shot they took at the death of Paul Simon (no, not the rock star). Professor Bainbridge actually met him a few times and found him to be a very... |

Blogger News Item (Dec 12 2003 06:56 GMT) - Lately, The General and a friend have been fleshing out a phenomenon we like to call "pulling a Travolta." The phenomenon got this name based on the post-Pulp Fiction career of actor John Travolta. If you are familiar with the expression "jumping the shark" -- which refers to the moment when a TV show or actor or cultural phenomenon goes from good to bad -- then you will understand Pulling A Travolta (from now on, PAT). PAT refers to the celebrity culture phenomenon when an undeserving actor (read: |

State Sponsored Racism (Dec 12 2003 06:55 GMT) - I've been following this story for a few days but I had initially dismissed it as the media just whipping up a storm over nothing, seems it is actually for real - France to ban pupils' religious dress. Might be... |

Overcharging In Iraq (Dec 12 2003 06:52 GMT) - They're in the news again, Halliburton my old employer, and I don't like seeing them in the press with all the negative connotations. Knowing the players there I would be more than surprised, I would be astonished, if there was an active attempt to defraud the government on the price of shipping fuel to Iraq. It just doesn't make sense. In actual fact the New York Times article states, “The officials said Halliburton did not appear to have profited from overcharging for fuel, but had instead paid a subcontractor too much for the gasoline in the first place. Halliburton has also said that one reason it needed to charge a high price for fuel was that it must be delivered in a combat zone. |

My first real contribution to an open source project! (Dec 12 2003 06:51 GMT) - You might’ve read on my blog a few days ago I that I found myself in need of importing links from an OPML file into a Wordpress blog. I implemented some code to do just that except that it was made specifically for the feed I had available (a NetNewsWire OPML file). One of the developers on the Wordpress team got inspired by my idea and implemented it in a more thoughtout way by using an XML parser to extract the data. This made the OPML importer able to work across all aggregators and the code a lot more pretty. |

Dec 12th 2003, 13:51 GMT (Dec 12 2003 06:51 GMT) - Can anyone here recommend a good email whitelisting service? I'm looking for a service where I can sign up, then things happen, and afterwards my email address is kinda protected, in terms of "you write me for the first time, get a verification/validation email back, click the link, my mail gets thru". Any pointers? Update: found 0spam. |
