Commercial Debian Reviews (Dec 12 2003 07:47 GMT) - OSNews is running a series of reviews of commercial Debian based distributions. The first was on Lindows, the second on Libranet and the latest is on MEPIS. This is interesting considering the recent proposals by Bruce Perens in his UserLinux whitepaper, which suggests that a multitude of companies would be required to tweak the distro to meet their needs. This is to some extent what is happening with the large number of Debian-derived distributions out there now. |

UserLinux Manifesto Updated (Dec 12 2003 07:47 GMT) - Bruce Perens has updated his UserLinux Manifesto with updates from his mailbox and from feedback on the list. For those who have not heard of UserLinux, Bruce is proposing the creation of a 100% free enterprise distribution (based on Debian of course) so that users are not tied in to expensive support paths from distributors. Ideally individual distributors would adapt the distribution to fit their specific industries and/or regional environments. |

None Does as Well as iLife (Dec 12 2003 07:43 GMT) - In his Mailbox column for the Wall Street Journal, Walt Mossberg compares Windows and Mac multimedia applications, In Apples iLife suite, the programs share a similar, consistent user interface and they can each easily tap into the others library of media files. For instance, the iDVD program can easily locate and use songs, photos and movies that are being managed by, or have been created by, its sister iLife programs — |

Meeting people is surprising (Dec 12 2003 07:41 GMT) - Tim Bray has another one of those experiences where meeting people in real life is a surprise. Fortunately, it turned out pleasantly -- Tim pronounced Dare to be "a friendly, cheerful, and interesting guy". I've been reading the XML 2003 posts with interest -- I've never made it to one of these conferences (being an exhibitor for IBM doesn't count), and since my interests are taking me away from the details of XML, it doesn't look like I'll be making it to future ones. Too bad you can't spend your life going to conferences. Even if I could do that, I'd hate the travelling. |

Republic of Corruption (Dec 12 2003 07:39 GMT) - Here is a choice quote from a speech by Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention, cited in a review of a new book by Gore Vidal in the New York Review of Books): I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such: because I think a General Government necessary for us, and there is no Form of Government but what may be a blessing to the People if well-administered; and I believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a Course of Years and can only end in Despotism as other forms have done before it, when the People shall become so corrupted as to need Despotic Government, being incapable of any other. The review quotes the following comment by Vidal in his book Now, two centuries and sixteen years later, Franklin's blunt dark prophecy has come true: |
