Bush gives lip service to Middle East democracy while top officials stroke autocrats (Dec 12 2003 07:37 GMT) - A few weeks ago I wondered whether President Bush meant it when he he said that his Administration would turn over a new leaf by promoting democracy vigorously in the Middle East rather than compromising with autocrats who support American policy. Since that time, Secretary of State Colin Powell met in early December with autocratic leaders in Morocco and Tunisia with only the mildest of criticism (as reported here ). Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld met on December 3 with the President Aliyev of Azerbaijan -- who recently succeeded his father as President in an election widely criticized as neither free nor fair -- without mentioning human rights or democracy at all, as reported here: |

The Dutch (Dec 12 2003 07:37 GMT) - Tonight I joined a rather large group of fine young folks at the local coffee shop. The driving cause was the return of Drew from his adventures in Australia. It was a quite evening despite the number of people present. Perhaps it was my personal take on the evening but regardless of that I'm glad I had my camera with me.He was happy to be home again however he forgot just how chilly it can get here in Oregon. |

Chandler now building on Panther (Dec 12 2003 07:34 GMT) - Morgen tracked down the problem that was keeping all of Chandler from buliding on Panther. The problem was with wxWindows -- so it hasn't been keeping me from working - the repository unit tests don't need wxWindows to run. However, I did have to get a completely fresh checkout from CVS. This shouldn't work this way -- somewhere in hardhat we're not blowing away all of the stuff that's getting built. I already had this problem when I copied my Chandler tree from Debian to the the Powerbook. |
