Why write MIDlets? (Dec 12 2003 07:28 GMT) - The current generation of smart mobile phones and wireless-enabled PDAs offer developers the opportunity to write software that extends device capability. This extensibility is migrating to mass-market mid-range phones and, as network providers move towards GPRS and 3G, the case for writing serious business software for mobile devices, particularly to access corporate databases, becomes compelling. This white paper considers the motivation for writing applications for mobile devices, and in particular the motivation for using the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) of Suns Java 2 Micro Edition platform. |

Reliable Video Communication over Lossy Packet Networks using Multiple State Encoding and Path Diversity (Dec 12 2003 07:28 GMT) - Video communication over lossy packet networks such as the Internet is hampered by limited bandwidth and packet loss. This paper presents a system for providing reliable video communication over these networks, where the system is composed of two subsystems: (1) multiple state video encoder/decoder and (2) a path diversity transmission system. Multiple state video coding combats the problem of error propagation at the decoder by coding the video into multiple independently decodable streams, each with its own prediction process and state. The path diversity transmission system explicitly sends different subsets of packets over different paths, as opposed to the default scenarios where the packets proceed along a single path, thereby enabling the end- to-end video application to effectively see an average path behavior. |

Unbalanced Multiple Description Video Communication Using Path Diversity (Dec 12 2003 07:28 GMT) - Multiple description (MD) coders provide important error resilience properties. Specifically, MD coders are designed to provide good performance when the loss is limited to a single description, but it is not known in advance which description. In this paper, MD video coding is combined with a path diversity transmission system for packet networks such as the Internet, where different descriptions are explicitly transmitted through different network paths, to improve the effectiveness of MD coding over a packet network by increasing the likelihood that the loss probabilities for each description are independent. It provides a design of MD video communication system that is effective in both balanced and unbalanced operation. |

Capacity Planning Tool for Streaming Media Services (Dec 12 2003 07:28 GMT) - The goal of the capacity planning tool proposed in this paper is to provide the best cost/performance configuration for support of a known media service workload. There are two essential components in capacity planning tool: i) the capacity measurements of different h/w and s/w solutions using a specially designed set of media benchmarks and ii) a media service workload profiler, called MediaProf, which extracts a set of quantitative and qualitative parameters characterizing the service demand. The capacity planning tool matches the requirements of the media service workload profile, SLAs and configuration constraints to produce the best available cost/performance solution. |

Easy way to stave of diabetes? (Dec 12 2003 07:27 GMT) - A Spoonful of Cinnamon Helps Treat Diabetes (Reuters) Reuters - People with diabetes can help keep their bodies healthy by simply adding a dash of spice to their diet, new research reports. OK, some things are just *too* easy to do. Apparently it just takes one gram of cinnamon a day to reduce blood fats and sugars. Cinnamon apparently contains compounds that help make insulin more efficient, improving the hormone's ability to bring glucose to the cells that need itand it also appears to help fat cells recognize and respond to insulin. In test tube and in animal studies, the spice increased glucose metabolism by about 20 times. |

It was almost more saddened ... (Dec 12 2003 07:26 GMT) - It was almost more saddened by the few people who commented on my bow tie today, who, when I told them I was wearing it in honor of Paul Simon, encouraged me with their shock and dismay, only to dismay me when I realized that they weren't quite on the same bus, Gus, if you know what I mean. |

Endicott Peabody (Dec 12 2003 07:25 GMT) - "Remember! Things in life will not always run smoothly. Sometimes we will be rising toward the heights - then all will seem to reverse itself and start downward. The great fact to remember is that the trend of civilization itself is forever upward, that a line drawn through the middle of the peaks and the valleys of the centuries always has an upward trend." |
