ACT Government gives burnt marsupial an email address (Dec 12 2003 07:15 GMT) - Browsing through the Environment ACT webpage I discovered that you can send email to Lucky (the bushfire mangy, flea bitten, charred and grilled koala from the 03 fires) at the following email address: Luckythekoala@act.gov.au Probably worth sending an email to the address and seeing what sort of response you get from the base grade public servant answering the email on the beleaguered marsupials behalf! |

ScreenSound decapitated - and castrated (Dec 12 2003 07:15 GMT) - The Canberra Times has got a story here (and ABC Online have a story here) on the carnage wreaked on ScreenSound this week as part of it's takeover by the Sydney based Australian Film Commission. Quite why a financer of film (the AFC) was considered suitable to run an archiver and distributor of film is a little beyond me. The two will frequently have opposing interests. But the trick of deciding first for "policy reasons" to cut off ScreenSound's means of support (their exhibition space and shop) as a precursor for saying it's unpopular and expensive has Senator Minchin's grubby idealogical paw prints all over it. The name change back to "Australian Film and Sound Archive" however is an improvement IMHO. |

Save the Ridge? Stop the road... (Dec 12 2003 07:15 GMT) - The Canberra Times has got a story here on the last ditch legal moves by the "Save The Ridge" (O'Connor Ridge) Campaign. As a Turner resident who's taken to breakfasting at Tilley's I realise I should be with them on this, but the gross unfairness of road access to Gungahlin really does overide the recreational value of the O'Connor Ridge to me. |

Did the earth move for you? (Dec 12 2003 07:15 GMT) - The Australia has a story here about a tremor last night (at 21:19). Che, Tony and I had just finished putting my new sofa's together and I was a little alarmed to feel my new sofa bucking and swaying at the time. Hopefully it won't be the last time the earth moves on that puppy. Anyone else feel it? |

Actors still required (Dec 12 2003 07:15 GMT) - The Players Company are still seeking actors for their 2004 season. Could you see yourself filling Rowan Atkinson's shoes in Blackadder? Would you like to walk 'barefoot in the park' as Robert Redford once did? Or can you do an 'absolutely fabulous' Joanna Lumley impersonation....? IF so... |

High Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC) Benefits (Dec 12 2003 07:14 GMT) - As computational needs continue to grow in complexity and larger data sets require analysis, customers are requiring higher levels of computational capability at much lower price points. High Performance Computing Clustering (HPCC) offers a solution that not only provides a powerful implementation of computing, but is also very cost effective when compared with the traditional method of using specialty computers designed for parallel computing. However, its existing network was aging and unstable, unable to handle the increased workload the Council required. With the help of Microsoft Gold Partner, Cedalion, Perth & Kinross Council migrated its network to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system with Active Directory directory service to solve its problem. The Council was able to set up a new network that not only was significantly more stable, secure, and easier to administer than their previous network, but also required 50 percent fewer servers and slashed the number of backup devices necessary, from almost 50 down to 2. |
