Who would you stick in Trafalgar Square? (Dec 12 2003 09:19 GMT) - "You're kidding! A car covered in bird droppings? A pigeon hotel? This isn't art, this is laziness! Who actually enjoys this so-say art anyway? |

A Delicate Balance: Teaching About Islam In American Schools (Dec 12 2003 09:19 GMT) - About 12 years ago, the story goes, Shabbir Mansuri's daughter Ahsia came home from school, waving her sixth-grade textbook opened to the chapter on Islam. The text explained that Muslims rub their faces in the sand during prayer. "Dad, we don't have any sand in our house," said Ahsia. "I don't think we're praying correctly." (Other Muslim parents reported teachers showing the movie "Not Without My Daughter" as a tool to teach about Islam. |

Merchants Of Hate: On Targeting Religious Minorities (Dec 12 2003 09:19 GMT) - "We don't want to take the law into our own hands, but we don't know what will happen to [Ahmadiyyas]," warned Mamtaji, imam of Rahim Metal Mosque in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This was his latest salvo in the recent (and growing) anti-Ahmadiyya campaign there. I grew up saying jumma prayers at Dhanmondi's Baitul Aman mosque in Dhaka. We had a tolerant, educated imam whose khutbas encouraged Muslims to educate themselves and uplift the community. If we wonder why the Muslim world is... |

Blosxom Plugin: atomfeed (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - I've been meaning to get to this for some time now and finally had a few moments to rub together and get it done. Atomfeed is a Blosxom plugin that provides an Atom feed of your site. The plugin has all you need right on-board, including the appropriate flavour template components and a couple-three optional configuration directives. You simply drop it into place in your plugins directory and point your browser at /index.atom (or append it to any path in your blog hierarchy, of course). |

A Hand-Written Letter (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - In today's post arrived a shiny copper-coloured envelope of the sort I'm always seeing in stationary shop windows and admiring in a "email's not that pretty" kind of way. I've often wondered about the kind of person who might keep up the art of letter-writing, something you just don't come across in my fields of work and play. The lettering on the envelope was done with a careful hand in neat black block letters. About the only writing I'm caught doing is Graffiti on glass, where handwriting counts only insofar as conveyance of digitizable information. Inside was a friendly hand-written note on pleasingly rhomboid paper. |

MobileWhack (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - I've a nice surprise for those of you who've read my endless prattle about my beloved 3650. I've just launched MobileWhack, a site dedicated to just such prattle: MobileWhack is all about that mobile handset, palmtop, hiptop, ipod, or laptop in your pocket, purse, briefcase, or dangling from your utility belt. It's about squeezing every last ounce of mobility out of your mobile device. MobileWhack isn't just infoporn, not that we don't like our fair share, mind you--Gizmodo, MobileBurn, and Phone Scoop spring to mind. |

A Paean to Continual Connectivity (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - "Sent (longhand) from my Palm Tungsten 3 over Bluetooth to my Nokia 3650 over T-Mobile GPRS to the Net to your mailbox. Wonders never cease..." So began a paean to continual connectivity that spanned 2 handhelds, 2 laptops, and one latte. In this month's O'Reilly "From the Editors List", Rob Flickenger, Brian Jepson, and I dispatch missives back and forth praising the magic and digging a little into the practicalities of taking your mail with you. |

Linux Smart Phone (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - /. notices that Trolltech's embedded Linux will be powering the Motorola A760 smartphone. Looks nice and feature-packed, with PDA, camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth, and (assumedly GPRS) Net access in a pretty Motorola-style flip-phone. Spidering Hacks in Print (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - I just received my editor's copies of Spidering Hacks by Kevin and Tara. Turned out rather well, if I may be so bold. The book covers all things spidering, from methodology to code, tools to ethics; take a gander at the TOC and browse the representative hacks online. It's always nice when a tech book adds to the discussion around the tools it represents and gives something back. |

Holster for Nokia 3650 (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - I've had trouble accepting the fact that nobody makes a decent cellphone belt-clip/case/holster for my Nokia 3650. I've come across only a couple of options specifically for the 3650: a belt-clip of hard plastic sans any face-protection, and a silly AT&T mobile store cover which protects the keys (making it harder to text) but not the screen (what really need protecting). And it's being slightly oversized means it doesn't fit into your generic holster. |

Palm Tungsten 3 Update (Dec 12 2003 09:15 GMT) - PalmOne have released a T3 Update which fixes some SD Card issues and an audio interrupt problem which caused the 400Mhz processor to run at slower speeds -- typically hovering around 260Mhz. WARNING: Be sure to backup first! Yes, I know you're always told to do a backup before an update, but this time it's for real. The update flashes the ROM, giving all your settings the boot -- and I mean _all_ of them. |
