Initial Impressions from XML 2003 (Dec 12 2003 12:19 GMT) - Today is the last day of the XML 2003 conference. So far it's been a pleasant experience. XML IN THE REAL WORLD Attendance at the conference was much lower than last year. Considering that last year Microsoft announced Office 2003 at the conference while this year there was no such major event, this is no surprise. |

Comment about the Compaq Portable (1889) (Dec 12 2003 12:18 GMT) - A colleague at a hospital where I used to work connected a Portable 386 to a port serial expander (16 serial ports) running UNIX and Universe. He demonstrated that it was possible to remove all the mini and mainframes by use of commodity PC hardware. He hid the luggable until the last minute, the bosses were in awe. I still have the same machine, I don't use it very often, but it just shows how well designed they are. This one has 6Mb RAM, a Weitek co-processor and a 120Mb hard drive. |

The motifs are on a ridge running SW/NE from the (Iron Age) Dun just West of the farmhouse to a Dun higher up the ridge. Most of the carvings are faint. However, this is a wonderful place with wide views. |

We finally made it through the challenges of booting Linux from Compact Flash, and I've negotiated with my supplier (for weather stations) for a 'Squeak PC' configuration at a special price. Since it's a cool thing, and seasonally appropriate, I thought I'd send out an announcement. |
