Music at Berkman (Dec 12 2003 13:20 GMT) - Last night as we were getting ready for the Thursday webcast, as usual, a member of the cleaning staff came in to empty the waste baskets at around 6:15PM. We happened to be playing music this time. I think it was Channel Z from the B-52's. If you haven't heard the song, it's a great rocker, easy to dance to, even if you're sittin down. |

How to: Lock down your WLAN (Dec 12 2003 13:19 GMT) - But if you *must* have wireless, here's an article on how to secure it. "In August, engineers with AirDefense, a wireless LAN security software vendor, made war drives in Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco, using scanners to find WLAN access points around downtown office buildings. The drivers discovered more than 1,100 access points. Of these, 57% weren't using any form of data encryption, although most of the actual data traffic in Chicago and San Francisco was encrypted by other means, such as via VPN. Three-quarters of the access points were broadcasting their Service Set Identifier (SSID), which is like hiding in a game of hide-and-seek while carrying a boom box blaring heavy metal. |

From trying to find the DMV office to waiting in line, Samology moblogs it. (Note: It is a bit Patty and Selma.) Gothamist recommends the License X-Press location at 7th Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan, but you can also find other local NY State DMV offices. |

These Thread-Bare Robes (Dec 12 2003 13:17 GMT) - Brian makes an excellent observation about the dime-store language of the Supremes' First Amendment decision. It is language that I think public choice theory helps explain. In fact, I don't think you can make sense of what the Court is saying at all without some reference to their relative economic position in Washington. You see, the Supremes are relative paupers in D.C. |

Jingle Dog We took Patches ... (Dec 12 2003 13:17 GMT) - Jingle Dog We took Patches in for grooming this week at our neighborhood Dog Grooming place. I think the place looks a little skanky, sitting as it is a little shack in a large parking lot near an overpass, but Dave thinks the old people who work there a fine and not likely to pull our dog's tail when we aren't looking. And Patches had turned into a stinky dog. |

The "Geneva Accord" (Dec 12 2003 13:17 GMT) - The "Geneva Accord" drafted and signed by Palestinian and Israeli negotiators acting in their private capacity has received extensive international attention. The Accord is apparently based on earlier discussions begun during the Taba talks of January 2000 that followed the failed Camp David summit ; Taba broke down without an agreement when Bill Clinton was replaced by George Bush and when Labor's Ehud Barak by Likud's Ariel Sharon. Official Palestinian-Israeli talks have been largely non-existent during the years since. |
