Sign of the times (Dec 12 2003 14:36 GMT) - While we were out running around last night, one of the stops we made was to browse around at Half-Price Books. (One of my favorite places!) As I was walking past the software section I noticed a little sign telling customers that they would be glad to buy and resell various games or children's software but would not be doing transactions involving Operating Systems or Office/Productivity software any longer. The reason given for this is that they felt that with all the various Product Activation and one-time installation schemes being built-in to software there was no way to be sure that they were selling a satisfactory product that would work for the customer who purchased it. I guess I can see why they would stop doing that. |

Blocks and blocks and blocks (Dec 12 2003 14:36 GMT) - filed under gadgets Went to the Apple Store in Soho yesterday with our friend Keren, who needed to pick up a new Powerbook, and just by coincidence came home to find an email suggesting this link to a Quicktime video of the incredibly, unbelievably long line there was to get into the opening of the Apple store in Tokyo last month. We've never seen anything like it, and what's even more amazing is how completely orderly the line, which stretches for blocks and blocks and blocks, was. Were they giving away free iPods or something? It's unreal. |

More on WiFi as the new Bluetooth (Dec 12 2003 14:36 GMT) - filed under wireless Since it's range is shorter and its speed is slower, one of the main advantages that Bluetooth has over WiFi is that it consumes far less power and thus won't kill the battery of your cellphone or headset or PDA. But maybe not for long. We mentioned something about this already back in October, but eWeek has more details on National Semiconductor's new low-power version of WiFi that might potentitally replace Bluetooth in some gadgets. |

Tom Peters live (Dec 12 2003 14:36 GMT) - Tom Peters was in town to talk about his new book, Re-Imagine, that "walks the walk" when it comes to arguing that business ought to be in technicolor, not black and white. I've been a fan of his since I first entered the business world with the academic's prejudice that business must be boring and the people must be not as smart as the ones in academics. Hah!
