The Lovin' Spoonful (Dec 12 2003 22:14 GMT) - I caffeinated at a Starbucks on 7th Avenue this morning. As I was awaiting my beverage, someone else’s White Chocolate Mocha Vanilla Syrup Extravaganza with Cremey-Ass Creme was set out and they hadn’t showed up yet.As I watched, the pressure of the foam inside this beverage caused it to slowly spurt and bubble out about a tablespoon of creamy white warm sticky goo. Now that’s a happy beverage. |

MS: Love the Gun You're With (Dec 12 2003 22:13 GMT) - Concealed-carry proponent Greg Jeffery fondly recalls the first time he went hunting, back in 1986: He traveled to Audrain County, just north of Columbia, with a friend from college and bagged a seven-point buck -- with an AK-47. Unable to believe this self-described city slicker had scored with such an unorthodox hunting method, his friend's dad brought out a dozen diners from a nearby eatery to admire the deer while Jeffery waited to check it with the conservation agent next door. 'What, did you just run into the woods, blindly spraying shots?' one of the disbelievers asked. |

CA: Cow Palace gun shows under fire (Dec 12 2003 22:13 GMT) - Following a rash of violence, including three recent murders, in the Bayview-Hunters Point district, San Mateo County supervisor and a local anti-gun group are working together to end gun shows at the Cow Palace. Supervisor Mike Nevin, on Tuesday, will introduce a resolution to the board urging the California Legislature to stop firearm sales at the state-owned Cow Palace in Daly City. The move comes at the urging of 'Brothers Against Guns,' a nonprofit struggling to curb gun-related violence among black youth in San Francisco's Sunnydale and Bayview-Hunters Point districts, right across the border from the Cow Palace. 'That's a neighborhood where [a gun show] is absolutely the wrong message,' said Nevin. If the San Mateo County Board adopts the resolution supporting a state ban, they will be following their peers on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, who passed a similar measure on Nov. |

Working with Schools - 14 Jan 2004 - University of Bristol (Dec 12 2003 22:13 GMT) - Working with schools can benefit all involved: the school(s), the university and the local community. The prime reason many HEIs carry out school liaison is to promote their institution in order to encourage more people to take up their Higher Education courses and make the institution more successful. However these activities can also be used to promote engineering, science and technology as subjects to school pupils who have little knowledge of the scope of these disciplines. This workshop will enable delegates to learn more about how to develop links with schools (including the administrative and organisational issues), discover some of the many projects promoting engineering, science and technology that they could get involved with and find out how other institutions are working with schools. |

Another Longevity Mechanism Uncovered (Dec 12 2003 22:13 GMT) - IOL reports that scientists have uncovered another biochemical longevity mechanism in nematode worms. The "TOR" protein is present in plants, animals and humans; it regulates metabolism and energy. By removing it, the life span of nematodes is nearly doubled. Scientists suggest that TOR may be involved in the mechanisms of calorie restriction, which have not yet been fully explored (although people are working on it). |

Europe Creates Military Planning Unit Separate From NATO (Dec 12 2003 22:12 GMT) - Europe Creates Military Planning Unit Separate From NATO Brussels (NYT) - At a summit meeting to create rules by which an expanded Europe will operate, the leaders of the 15-nation European Union adopted a common security strategy today to enable Europe to "share in the responsibility for global security and in building a better world." EU adopts watered-down defence plan (Reuters) - Their plan falls deliberately short of French and German ambitions because of Washington's deep suspicions. The United States was particularly irked by plans -- championed by Paris and Berlin at the height of strains over Iraq -- to establish a separate military headquarters, branding them "the most serious threat" to NATO's future. The plan now is for the EU and NATO to put liaison teams at each other's military headquarters, and the EU's operational cell -- to be set up as early as possible in 2004 -- will be both small and only used as a last resort. |
