Carter Impressed by Dean (Dec 12 2003 23:37 GMT) - Looking for a reason not to vote for Howard Dean should he become the Democratic nominee? Try this: Former President Jimmy Carter, in an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live" slated to air at 9 tonight, says he is impressed by Howard Dean, the Democratic presidential nomination front-runner, although he has no immediate plans to endorse a candidate. It is still theorically possible to withhold judgement on this matter due to the unofficial nature of Carter's 'endorsement'... |

About 400 people marched into East Los Angeles, waving signs that read, in... |

Did Bush betray Taiwan? (Dec 12 2003 23:37 GMT) - Bush needs China's help if he is to succeed in stopping North Korea from building and selling nuclear arms and technology to terrorist sponsoring nations. Of course, China can't be too happy about a nuclear armed NK. A regime that tests its ballistic missiles by firing them over Japan could well start a nuclear arms race in that region. Nuclear-armed SK, Japan, and even Taiwan, would not serve China's strategic goals. But China has not yet put enough pressure on NK. |

What's It Going to Be? (Dec 12 2003 23:37 GMT) - While Defense Secretary Rumsfeld is seeking a more streamlined military, members of Congress think we need more troops: For years, Congress has generally deferred to the Pentagon on troop strength. But there appears to be growing concern over the issue, even among Republicans. Among the signs of a shift: • Congress agreed this year to spend $68 million to increase the Army by 2,400 slots, about 0. |

TERROR AT HOME AND ABROAD? (Dec 12 2003 23:34 GMT) - Ok, first I go down to Miami and hear the word anarchist repeated on the TV news and in newspapers like the Miami Herald like mantra in connection with all sorts of outlandish allegations, then the New York Times publishes proof that dissent is being criminalized beyond belief and that we no longer have the right to assert our will over our government and now finally this incendiary piece comes out on some presumably conservative news site (this is by far the worst thing I have seen along these lines yet) and I feel like I have to scream ANARCHIST DOES NOT EQUAL TERRORIST MUTHERF**KER!!! If we have no right to act upon and be authors of our own political destiny, if dissent and anarchism in particular is linked necessarily to terror, and if we are to be convicted of crimes not committed but only spoken, thought, etc. while the real murderers sit in their offices reaping the benefits of their crimes then my question is DO WE HAVE ANY FUCKING CONTROL OVER OUR LIVES WHATSOEVER?!? When dissent is criminalized, when protests are militarized and protestors shot at with rubber bullets and beaten without just cause and there is no longer any constructive outlet for differing political beliefs then I ask, what recourse is left for those who do not align themselves with the power? If you ask me who creates terrorists, then I'll gladly point you in the direction of Pennslvannia Avenue and a governement that is not, was not, and will never be our own. |

LAX Lacks Hacks. Reason writers ... (Dec 12 2003 23:33 GMT) - LAX Lacks Hacks. Reason writers around town: In the National Post, Matt Welch revisits the feds' idiocy over journalistic visas. [Hit & Run] What makes this dumb situation truly retarded is officials from both the State Department and Homeland Security will tell you privately that it's precisely as ridiculous and counter-productive as it looks. But since the two bureaucracies despise each other, and since one makes the policy (State) while the other enforces it (Homeland Security), letting a few LAX border guards go postal on some hapless journalists actually serves both agencies in the broader arm-wrestling match. |
