Sharing music still illegal*, dammit: Copyright Board decision myths (Dec 13 2003 23:04 GMT) - I'm annoyed at the number of intelligent people who are telling each other that yesterday's Copyright Board decision makes peer-to-peer filesharing à la Napster, perfectly legal in Canada. That's generally not true, although there are some subtleties involved, which is why I used an asterisk in the headline. I've also heard some shocking misconceptions about what the decision will do to the price of media, how a person might get around paying the levy, and so on. Here's my contribution to the confusion. |

Wikis and Weblogs (Dec 13 2003 23:03 GMT) - Someone did a collection of tools that combine Wikis with Weblogs. I am very interested in this approach. But I have not yet seen a site that really shows how this can be superior to a seperate Wiki plus Weblog. A weblog often contains a lot of commentary (or quotes) while WiKis are more about timeless encyclopedic collections.Socialtext seems to work this way. |

Final post on XML USA 2003 (Dec 13 2003 23:03 GMT) - Highlight of the last day for me was the session I chaired in which Henry Thomson talked about pipeline processing (Yay!) and Sam Ruby walked through the Atom syndication project.I did manage to exchange a few words with Rick Jelliffe at lunch before I had to dash off early. Ricks presentation on quality in XML processing and the distinction between "plan" and "probe" techniques is required reading for anyone approaching XML processing or schema design.Unfortunately, I had to spend Thursday in D. |
