Criminal Suspects Meet Their Match with Face Recognition Technology (Dec 14 2003 07:00 GMT) - Belgium is the first country in Europe to deploy face recognition technology nationwide. The innovative biometrics solution, based on a Microsoft Windows NT platform, is improving the quality of police data and facilitating investigative research. It's also helping to take much of the guesswork out of policing. Police no longer enter a suspect's name into a computer as he could be operating under a false identity. They put in his picture and find out he has five aliases. |

Going Online, In Line with Europe (Dec 14 2003 07:00 GMT) - Until 1990, Czech Customs involved little more than trying to prevent people from smuggling literature into the country. Foreign trade wasn't a concerned since all import and export operations were conducted by about 30 companies owned and controlled by the state. Customs is in the first row of reform for the Czech Republic's accession to the European Union. Starting with nothing, it now has fully automated processes for the registration of goods and the collection of duties. Now e-commerce technologies are being applied to provide importers and exporters with 'One Window to Customs'. |

Pete's tutorials (Dec 14 2003 07:00 GMT) - While I've been teaching myself web stuff over the last year I've been slightly frustrated by a lack of useful resources for someone of my level. It seems like everything out there is either aimed at absolute beginners or experts with nothing for the more middling student. And so, to go a small way towards rectifying this, I'm going to start detailing some of the things I've been doing. Hopefully they'll be of some use to someone out there. Feedback, as ever, is welcome. |

Rejigging the link farm to output in a variety of ways (Dec 14 2003 07:00 GMT) - I've made some changes to the back end of the link farm. The original setup was that my comments on the link were buried away within the title tag and it occurred to me that when I scroll through other linklogs of this ilk I seldom bother to hover. However, the way the linkfarm is displayed on the sidebar of the main page dictates that they have to be hidden away. At the same time I wanted to make the RSS feed tidier. The obvious solution was to split up the three elements of the link and then stitch them back together depending on how the link is displayed. |
